The United Royal Provinces of Yanitaria (Fr: Les Provinces Royales Unies de Yanitarie, one must note that Yanitaria is the anglicized version of the name) is a nation in Greater Dienstad, and a member of the Fedala Accord. It is a peaceful nation, who's culture puts much emphasis on art and scholastic performance, as well as ensuring it's citizens have all their basic needs, such as health care and education met. While Yanitaria is an extremely peaceful nation compared to most others, it does keep a standing, extremely professional military ready to protect and defend it's borders and interests abroad. It borders Jagada and La Mer de Jagade to the west, L'Océan Prussien to the east, and Corbournne to the south.

History
Yanitaria was first settled by a Proto-Indo-European culture around 4000 B.C.E., however very little has been discovered about these first people. This is largely due to the fact that they mainly built using wood instead of stone, and were not very advanced farmers. However remains of homes, pottery, and even some bronze weaponry have revealed that they most likely stagnated due to a lack of interaction with opposing cultures. Constant fighting was evident, with wooden and stone weapons surviving much longer than they rightly should have. Around 900 B.C.E., a Stemilov warlord by the name of Belaj(although there is no historical record of a warlord by this name, he seems to be an important figure in ancient Yanitarian-Stemilov myth as a creator god from which all people are descended from, the real name may have changed over time) is said to have invaded southern Yanitaria using bronze age weapons of somewhat high quality. Over the course of his lifetime, he was able to conquer approximately half of modern day Yanitaria, mostly by forcing the various city states in his path to surrender until he could no longer effectively rule such a large area with the soldiers and people he had brought, and then forcing the rest of modern day Yanitaria to become client states. Through interbreeding, the Balaj civilization arose with it's own primitive writing system which was somewhat similar to cuneiform, but which was spoken more similarly to the early Stemilov language.
Around 250 B.C.E. an West Scandinavian speaking people from southern Kabavia(as opposed to Kabavians, who spoke East Scandinavian)started raiding the area, eventually destroying the organized government of the Stemilov. The main advantage being their iron weaponry, which was technically inferior to bronze, but infinitely cheaper, allowing them to field many more professional soldiers, at a much higher profit from raiding. Steadily, rich Southern Kabavians moved to Yanitaria, focusing on the modern day province of Oppland. After a brief treaty securing modern day Oppland for the Kabavians, who had already started deviating culturally from their mainland neighbors, before continuing their war in 200 B.C.E. After continuous fighting, and the mass slaughter or enslavery and assimilation of the ethnic Stemilov, those who would later become known as "Les Yanitarien" by their southern neighbors took complete control of mainland Yanitaria, dividing it into five kingdoms, which would become the five mainland provinces of Yanitaria.
The Yanitarians managed to control their independent kingdoms from approximately 150 B.C.E. by using applied raiding against neighboring nations, and would remain free until around 1,200 C.E., when a crusade by the catholic Arkadians from neighboring Corbournne, managed to take advantage of surprise and infighting in order to wage a successful war. With the help of Prussian mercenaries and hired ships, they attacked from both the mountainous south and the flat north, although this war was remarkably more merciful, as the pagan Yanitarians were quick to adopt Catholicism in order to avoid death at the hands of the invaders. Arkadians installed themselves as the nobility of the country, and ruled rather cruelly until modern times. The long Kabavian Wars, in addition to the rise of Hugoism and the fall of Christianity marked the modern age, from the late 1800's to the 1980's.
It was in 1980 that a soon to be national hero, Mattias Norheim, began a revolution that would overthrow the Arkadian monarchy. The November Revolution lasted from November of 1980 until November 10th, 1990, a full ten years, after which a brief period of political turbulence ensued before Norheim stepped in yet again to stabilize the country, installing a Hugoist Constitutional Monarchy. After the revolution, many reforms were made to the Yanitarian government, including entrance into the Fedala Accord, and the return of civil freedoms which the theocratic-corporatist kingdom had refused it's non-Arkadian citizens. Additionally, a great amount of money was invested in modernizing the Yanitarian Royal Military, while avoiding wars, leaving Yanitaria with an extremely well trained, yet inexperienced military.
Politics
Currently the United Royal Provinces of Yanitaria is a Constitutional Monarchy, with a unicarmeral parliament, called "Le Parlement". The executive branch of the government is headed by the King, currently Frederick Norheim, while the Premier Ministre (often abbreviated as Premier) serves a parallel, but less powerful role. While both must sign any bill into law, the king additionally is the supreme commander of the military, and officially levies taxes, although this is often delegated to provincial leaders. Finally, a system of courts exist, with the second highest court, the Conseil d'État, oversee court cases in order to judge the legality of executive decisions, laws, and in general the highest laws of the land, in addition to giving legal advise to the government. For reference, the highest court in the land, the Haute Cour de Justice, is a specially convened court which may try members of Parlement (who are individually called un Conseiller), the King, the Premier, or even members of the Conseil d'État for high treason, although to date this has not come up.
Provinces
The URPY is a federal union of 7 provinces (including the Free City of La Cluse-et-Mijoux), 4 Colonial Provinces, one administrative division, and one autonomous province. The original 5 provinces existed as cultural lines even while the first PIE speaking peoples, but truly come from the original 5 Yanitarien kingdoms. La Province Oriental was a later conquest by the Arkadians during the 1400s, while the Free City of La Cluse-et-Mijoux is a more modern conquest, and a disputed territory which is not recognized by many nations in the world (most notably by dogmatically anti-socialist nations, who fail to realize that Hugoist Yanitaria is remarkably more free than the previous, corporatist kingdom). Kabavia was officially annexed at the end of the Kabavian War, according to a previously arranged agreement between the exiled Kabavian monarch and the Arkadian monarch of Arkado-Yanitarie. The colonial provinces of Lieche and Wittenshcau were bought after the breakup of a previous nation, while Yanitarien-Kabavia was directly annexed after the Kabavian War. The Colonial Province of Okhotsk was bought from it's previous owners, and opened to foreign colonization. Finally, the tiny island of "Mattiasland" was bought from Stoklomolvi, and currently only houses a small village of Yanitariens who settled there. Mattiasland is only an administrative division because of it's minuscule size.
Geography
Yanitaria's provinces are usually divided up by geographical features. For instance, Province Montagneuse has, unsurprisingly, a large and extensive mountain range. Generally, the land to the south is more mountainous, flattening out as you head north. While Province Montagneuse has extremely rough terrain, Province des Collines (Province of Hills) is less so, with rolling hills. Oppland is a bit of a mixture of the previous two, with low mountains to the south, flattening out as one moves towards the sea. Province Royale is hilly along most of the south, central, and eastern areas, were as the western reaches flatten out and slowly slope downwards. Champs du Nord (Northern Fields) is a primarily agricultural province, due to the fertile, flat land, and La Durença, a river running from La Mer de Jagade to L'Océan Prussien (The Sea of Jagada and the Prussian Ocean, respectively. Province Oriental is centered on the extinct volcano, Mont Uffholtz, named after the Prussian captain who first settled on the island, although there are lowlands to the north, west, and south. A good portion of the south east island ends in an abrupt cliff The same is also true for a stretch of coast on the mainland that is between the Avre river and the Péninsule Yanitarien. Both areas offer spectacular views, and are a major source of tourism. Also notable are the various natural caves in the mountains, some of which contain extensive, undiscovered archeological remains that have only recently been of interest to the nation, while others have been expanded over the course of 80 years as fortifications for the military (many have since been abandoned or turned into museums).
Climate wise, Yanitaria is quite nice. Most of the country gets adequate rainfall, with the exception of the areas located on the land side of the mountains, which are often drier, with low fertility land that often grows low-requirement crops, like marijuana. The province Champs du Nord, as well as the sea sides of the mountainous areas are extremely fertile, making Yanitaria a major exporter of agricultural products. Summers are generally mild, with heavy but sporadic rain throughout, while winters and late fall can reach very harsh temperatures, with much snow. Fall is considered the best time to visit the country, as many of the trees turn to beautiful oranges and yellows, while the weather is a bit chilly, and the skies are generally clear.

Demographics
Most Yanitarians are descended from the Scandinavian Yanitariens, or the french speaking Arkadians. Additionally there are minority populations of spanish speaking peoples from the war west of Greater Dienstad, german speaking peoples from Maccabees and Prussians from The Peoples Freedom. Approximately 70% of people claim Yanitarien heritage, 20% Arkadian, 7.5% Prussian or Macabean German, and 2.5% Macabean Spanish (although many of the spanish speaking peoples are in fact from countries around Macabees, including SafeHaven, Guffingford, and Zarbia, most immigrating during The War of Golden Succession.
Of those people, 99% of them speak French, 35% speak Norwegian, 6% speak German, and 2% of them speak spanish.
Yanitarians, for the most part, are atheists, part of a trend that started sometime during the 1200s and steadily increasing until an explosion during the 1800s, and again after the Kabavian War. Approximately 85% of Yanitarians hold no religious beliefs, or hold religious beliefs only for reason of heritage with out sincerely believing them, while 7% are catholic, 3% are muslim, 2% are protestant christian, 2% are polytheistic pagan, while the remaining 1% belong to various oriental religions, such as buddhism.
Culture
Yanitaria is more than anything culturally rich, especially in recent centuries. Throughout Yanitarian history it was popular for rich land owners to become patrons of the arts, supporting artists, musicians, sculptors, and writers. This tradition has carried on extremely well in more recent years, with most communities having some form of artists guild where aspiring musicians, artists, writers, film makers, etc. may showcase their work in order to attract donations, patrons, or jobs working in the local area. One great example of this is the band Erik Est Mort, which started in a local artists collective in Skyberg, and worked their way up from preforming in cafés on Saturday nights to performing with the best bands in Yanitaria during a recent collaborative CD.
Generally independent art, that is, art made entirely for the sake of art, with out interference or help by any sort of corporation, is prefered, due to a pervasive stigma. It is largely felt that corporate record labels, publishers, studios, etc are only out to make money, and will push an artist to produce an album with out allowing to fully explore and perfect their music, often leading to "five minute wonders", the Yanitarian expression for an artist that produces a great first album (in the case of musical artists, but the term may be applied to other arts), with later work being of poorer and poorer quality. Whether or not this is true is irrelevant, as many simply refuse to spend money on corporate art, and corporations find it extremely hard to compete with independent, internet based artists who often distribute their initial work at low cost or even for free. Because of the large amount of independent artists, hipster, or "indie" culture is extremely popular in Yanitaria.
As an artist, it is extremely hard to support the lifestyle of most foreign celebrities, however there are, person per person, more artists in Yanitaria supporting themselves comfortably than in most countries, due to public support of artists. Indeed, around the weekend, Yanitarian cities come to life with music, poetry readings, lights, and innovative displays of creativity, such as "movie streets" where independant films are broadcast on the sides of buildings, while a speaker system broadcasts the sound on the sidewalk in front of the building. This can obviously be noisy, however in neighborhoods dominated by younger people, these events are extremely popular, and often hinder traffic due to the party-like revelry that often takes place during such showings of movies. It is not uncommon at such events to see two movies being played on the same street. Local artists often look to their heritage to influence their art. As a result, art influenced by the heavily romanticized viking age of Yanitaria, political views, and even popular culture is extremely common.
In support of artists, the Yanitarian government has very loose copyright laws, which basically only protect one from plagiarism, and very lax broadcasting laws for private radio stations. Often no license is required to start one's own radio station, so long as own use the designated local frequency range (one may acquire a guideline for this online or at their local community center or government office). Additionally, Yanitarians take an extremely liberal view of marijuana and alcohol, due to their culture. Yanitarian children are usually exposed to such things at a young age, and are taught about responsible use, and imparted with a stigma against binge drinking and abuse of cannabis. Due to this, Yanitaria has extremely low amounts of alcohol related deaths. Marijuana is entirely legal, the government seeing no reason why responsible citizens cannot indulge in one of the most non-lethal drugs available. However underage smoking, both tobacco and marijuana, is a problem throughout Yanitaria, however the public is not entirely concerned. Absinthe is the national drink, and is more popular than wine, with many restaurants serving it after diner. Additionally, many restaurants, cafés, and even delicatessens offer customers the chance to rent a Hookah and buy tobacco or marijuana. to smoke, however they also allow patrons to supply their own materials to smoke. Indeed, social drinking and smoking is almost a necessity in Yanitaria.
