The 40th World Cup was held by Starblaydia and Krytenia (later known as West Starblaydia), and won by Valanora (Elves Security Forces). It marked Krytenia's record-equalling third time of co-hosting a World Cup (as a nation, rather than a user), and Starblaydia's second. Krytenia tied with Vilita for three hosted cups, while for Starblaydia it marked eighty years since their first World Cup hosting duty, co-hosting World Cup 20 with Druida. World Cup 20's proposed bid came with the statement "we're attempting to make sure it's set up for another 20 editions", making it a particularly special occasion for Starblaydia to take up the reins once more to complete those 20 editions, over three years later in real life.

Krytenia and Starblaydia proposed an audacious 'Uber-bid', also described as 'an XL bid for the XL cup'. Starblaydia and Krytenia proposed to host all three World Cup-related competitions: the Pre-Cup Baptism of Fire, the Cup itself and the Cup of Harmony for non-qualifiers. All three competitions were, indeed, awarded to the Uber-bid, the Cup of Harmony after a vote between four bids.

Host nations

Krytenia and Starblaydia sit on opposite sides of the great Bekk lake in the sporting superpower region of Atlantian Oceania - funnily enough Krytenia now occupies the land formerly owned by Starblaydia's WC20 host partner Druida - which made the logistical aspects of dually-hosting a World Cup far easier than usual, with frequent and regular air and sea links between the two nations.

Starblaydi Preparations

Starblaydia is a long-time participant of the World Cup, starting in World Cup 15 and stretching all the way through to the present 40th edition. They have twice been crowned World Champions, in World Cups 25 & 28, as well as Olympic, Under-21 and five-time regional Champions. Starblaydia co-hosted the World Cup in WC20, as well as co-hosting the Baptisms of Fire for WC17 & 18. Starblaydia also plays host to The Di Bradini Cup, which is currently the only regular Under-21 football tournament in the world. The nation also held the Presidency of the World Cup Committee for three terms between World Cups 25 and 33. Starblaydia did not enter World Cups 34 through 37 due to an immense regional war.

The Protectorate of Starblaydia is a former dictatorship, now a constitutional monarchy with a Lord-Protector at its head. As with many former police states, the people are coming to terms with being free, while the state is coming to terms with not being in complete control of the everyday lives of ordinary people. Though often viewed as a malevolent dictatorship by outsiders, the Starblaydi regime actually made life fairly good for the majority of its people, those who didn't buck the system and try to invoke democracy.

With integrated transport links, it was very easy to get around Starblaydia whether by car, bus, train or foot. For those fans who could not get to the games for lack of tickets, enormous screens were set up in public parks and squares, as well as being on large-screen TVs in most pubs, bars and similar. Starblaydi Combined Broadcasting (SCB) provided the main televisual and online international feed for the Starblaydi section of the tournament.

Krytenian Preparations

Krytenia also made their debut in World Cup 15, and celebrated their centenary of participation at the beginning of the qualifying stages for World Cup 40. Though they have never won the greatest prize in the sport, they have reached the semi-finals on four occasions. The tournament would be Krytenia's third bite at hosting the World Cup; they also hosting the Cup of Harmony for the third time. Indeed, Krytenia are the only nation to have held football's "Big Three" tournaments (World Cup, AOCAF Cup, Cup of Harmony) three times - and the AOCAF was, itself, a creation of Krytenian ingenuity. The East Bekk War, as well as an insular (and paranoid) foreign policy, led to Krytenia missing out on World Cups 34-37.

The United Provinces of Krytenia has, in the distant past, been a monarchy, and more recently a benevolent state-run "republic"; it is now a proper republic, albeit one with a life-term President. The people are friendly and welcoming, and the nation has become a melting-pot for many cultures.

Krytenian rail infrastructure was heavily invested in to make it ready for the influx of fans for the tournament, whilst three of the nation's airports were refurbished. Those fans who arrived at their destination without tickets were catered for many, many sports bars found around the country. The Krytenian Broadcasting Service (KBS) provided the main televisual and online international feed for the Krytenian section of the tournament.

The marriage of President Dominique Domasca to Tiberius Starblayde, the Starblaydi Lord-Protector on the eve of the finals led to Krytenia participating in the tournament under the new name of West Starblaydia. Proomotional materials, however, remained conspicuous by their referral to the nation as "Krytenia".

Tournaments

The 27th Baptism of Fire

The Baptism of Fire for World Cup 40, the 27th edition, was hosted singularly by Starblaydia, as the first part of the 'Uber-bid'. Twenty-two teams entered and were split into two unusually-large groups, with each team playing ten matches, before the top sixteen advanced to the knockout stages. The final was contested between the Group Lion and Group Eagle winners, Kose and The Turkomans and Newmanistan respectively, faced each other in the final, with Newmanistan taking the much-coveted title in a 3-1 win.

World Cup Qualifying

Ninety-two teams, including the two hosts, signed-up for the Cup, meaning ninety teams had to fight it out for thirty open slots in the Cup proper. Stadia

To match the enormity of World Cup 40, a grand total of 40 separate stadia are to be used to host the 40th World Cup., in order to spread the event across every corner of the two hosting nations, rather than confine it to a mere handful. All Starblaydi stadia are located on the mainland (with the stadia on the island of Aquiliana being used for the Cup of Harmony).
