The World Assembly is a UN-type international organization whose purpose is to create binding international law by majority vote of the member countries. It was established on April 6, 2008, with the passage of World Assembly Resolution #1: The World Assembly. Its predecessor organization, the United Nations, endured from November 2002 until it was burned to the ground on April 1, 2008. From the ashes of the old UN, international diplomats agreed to start from scratch by blacking out and archiving all old UN resolutions, and opening a new book of international law. Dozens of resolutions (including a number of repeals) have been passed under the new organization -- covering everything from genocide to free trade to slavery to labor rights to WA headquarters and funding -- and a comparable handful of others rejected. (Please see the WA timeline on NSwiki.)

Since June 2009, the WA has included a "Security Council" for purposes of enhancing the WA's role in NS gameplay. The creation of this institution was necessary following a protracted controversy over the implementation of new categories, criticized as irrelevant to the WA's legislative process and RP conventions.

Roleplay vs Gameplay

Although many aspects of the WA, including legislation, are roleplayed by regulars of the WA forum and older RPers (as well as in certain regions), to most players the WA is chiefly a Gameplay instrument, utilized mostly for regional advantage. The UN before it was regarded in much the same way. While ignoring passed resolutions is considered "Godmoding" by WA regulars, doing so is common practice among the more hardcore NS roleplayers.
