| 1 | The United Solar Republics adheres to the Holocene Calendar, which is identical to the astronomical calendar with a positive shift of 10,000 years. Although the Bharatvarsan customary calendar, Nipponian customary calendar, and Hindu calendars are extremely commonplace, these are used almost exclusively to keep track of cultural events. | |||||
The United Solar Republics (Gujarati: સંયુક્ત સુરજ પ્રજાસત્તાકં, Saṅyukt Suraj Prajāsattākoṅ; Japanese: 太陽連合共和国, Taiyou Rengou Kyouwakoku), also referred to as the USR and sometimes (improperly) referred to as Solaria, is a federal technocratic constitutional republic comprised of three constituent countries, collectively divided into sixty subdivisions (known as free states) and two union territories and located primarily in eastern Aerova. The United Solar Republics mainland shares land borders with (counterclockwise from center-top) Khorasan (across the Khalath Desert and the Northern Line), Cocentrica (across the Himajagir Mountains on the Bharatvarsan border and across the Tamayama-Yushan Mountains on the Nipponian border), Daibac (across the Assami Hills), Jeuna (across the Indra-Karsukian Mountains), and the Franberrian territory of Terra di Vittorio in Aerova. The region of Solar Northwest Haven in northwest Haven borders Tyrandis, the Olmedrecan territory of Karjala, and Ngunusania; the region of New Akihabara-Powai in northeast Haven borders the Cohenian territory of Letiska, the Cravannic territory of Cambridge, and Libersolum; the Free Cities borders Leistung; Cape White Sands in north Karain borders the North Karaini Union; the Ituriland borders Rustasia, the Willinkian territory of Willinkian Bechuanaland, and the Nanwian territory of Aurenia in western Karain; the Serengeti borders Asanteh in central Karain; and the free state of Sarabhai-Itokawa lies in the Sea of Enlightenment on the Moon. The free state of Indratenjin Bay is located to the south of Cocentrican Feng Gangwan in eastern Karain. Cape Langrange borders Seine-Lausanne, Auvergne, and Hanover-Swabia in northern Otcina, and New Akasha borders the Leistungi territory of Montroyaume in southern Otcina. In eastern Otcina, Kobayashido borders Hisui no Teikoku, the Nanwian territory of Raconia, and the Leistungi territory of Hoheländern, and Gyeongseung borders Raconia's easternmost edge.
Home to some of the oldest civilizations known to man, particularly the Indus Valley Civilization and the ancient Japanese civilization, the home countries of the USR have been identified with their commercial wealth, rich culture, their roles as major centres of intellectual development, and their pluralism. The USR is the birthplace of Hindu numerals as well as four of the world's major religions– Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Shinto. The USR was also one of the first places to develop modern mathematics, with the Shulba Sutras being developed around 800 BCE (9200 in the Solar Calendar). The home countries of Bharatvarsa and Nippon developed independently from antiquity until the late 17th century CE, each achieving and retaining a status of being world leaders in economic and technological development. The two countries were extensively connected through extremely close political, cultural, and economic relations. In particular, the links of Buddhism and a mutual cultural and economic focus on scientific and technological development. The two countries remained (and still remain) quite distinct, however, with Bharatvarsa characterised by much greater ethnolinguistic diversity than Nippon in terms of the number of internal ethnicities and languages, and Bharatvarsa culturally based on Hinduism as opposed to Nippon's Shinto cultural basis.
Facing the prospect of a prolonged total war against the Cocentrican Mian Dynasty during the height of the Great Mian War, the two countries developed the framework for what would eventually become the United Solar Republics as a way to further integrate the two states. The agreement for unification was established with the Solar Declaration on 29 July 1684, with the adoption of a constitution on 1 June 1700 heralding full unification. This included the United Solar Republics Bill of Rights, a comprehensive bill guaranteeing many of the fundamental rights and freedoms accorded to Solar citizens. Sustained economic and technological growth following the Mian War led to the development of an overseas colonial empire, the first of its kind for an Aerovan state. The legacy of this development remains profound and far reaching on the union, and can still be seen today in Solar economic policies and development patterns, Solar geography, as well as the Solar Commonwealth. Solar history since unification has been centred around strong ties to other progressive and liberal states, with the USR forming extremely strong and close ties with Cravan, Shansekia, Karita, Edolia, and Pauldustllah amongst others during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The USR joined the Anti-Dominion Alliance and became an influential founding member of its successor groups, the United Nationstates and the United Alliance of Progressive States (UnAPS) until the final dissolution of the UnAPS in 1908.
The United Solar Republics is currently a major power, with the largest economy by purchasing power parity and the fifth-largest by purchasing power per capita. Centuries of private and public focus on scientific and technological development, culminating in the Panyu-Goa Programme (also known as the Solar-Cocentrican consensus), have made the USR one of the world's primary centres of scientific and technological innovation. The United Solar Republics is also significantly notable for its technoprogressive politics, its high standards of living (ranking tenth in HDI alongside Cravan), its diverse population and climates, its unique form of government, its space programme and lunar colonies, and its role in promoting human rights, technological and economic development across the world. The USR contains a vast amount of linguistic diversity, concentrated primarily in Eastern Bharatvarsa, with the free state of Akashiya Pahado and Nagaland alone containing some seventy-three languages. This diversity has been augmented through large-scale immigration from several countries. Despite this diversity, there is a large amount of ethnic and cultural homogeneity in the union, with the Nipponian and North Bharatvarsan ethnic groups- the two major ethnic groups of the Solar people- comprising a full 87% of people in the USR.

Etymology
The United Solar Republics is commonly abbreviated as the U.S.R. or the USR. The full name appeared first in the Solar Declaration as a “body of unification between these states of a united Solar federation”, and first appeared as “the United Solar Republics” in the United Solar Republics Constitution. The standard way to refer to the United Solar Republics as an adjective is Solar and USR (“the Solar population”, “USR troops”), although United Solar Republican is the formal adjective. “Solaria” is a widely used name for the country, but is disparaged officially, in favour of “the USR” or “Sunland”, which corresponds to the literal translation of the short-form names of the country in Gujarati and Japanese. (In Gujarati, this is સૌરાષ્ટ્ર or Saurashtra; in Japanese, this is 太陽国 or Taiyoukoku.) “Solarian”, however, is both the proper and most common term used to refer to the Solar people. The United Solar Republics is traditionally known as the Land of the Radiant Sun (in Gujarati, સૂર્ય કી ચમક રાષ્ટ્ર or Surya ki Chamak Rashtra; in Japanese, 太陽のように輝くように国家 or Taiyou Noyouni Kagayaku Youni Kokka), and the individual countries of Bharatvarsa and Nippon have several traditional and poetic names ascribed to each.
The name Bharatvarsa (भरत्वर्स in Sanskrit and ભારત્વરસા in Gujarati, literally the land of Bharata) is derived from the legendary king Bharata in Hindu mythology, who first unified the country under his rule "from the emerald waters of Kanyakumari to the celestial mountains, the Himalaya", and whose reign fostered the birth of the modern Bharatvarsan people. The name Sindhusthāna (सिन्धुस्थान in Sanskrit and સીન્ધુસ્થાના in Gujarati), literally Land of the river Sindhu is derived from the Sindhu River and the Sanskrit suffix "-sthāna" (-स्थान), meaning "land of". The Sindhu River also lends its name to Hinduism, the native and overwhelmingly predominant spiritual and philosophical religious tradition in Bharatvarsa, which despite the tremendous secularisation of the United Solar Republics still permeates Bharatvarsan and Solar society as a series of deeply-ingrained cultural traditions.
The name Nippon (written as にっぽん in kana) and its synonym Nihon (written as にほん in kana), both written as 日本国 in kanji, are both literally translated as the sun's origin, giving rise to the popular western name Land of the Rising Sun. The term stems from antiquity; the first dynasty of Nippon (the Yamato dynasty) used this term to describe itself, in reference to the eastward position of the country relative to the contemporaneous Bharatvarsan Maurya Empire and Cocentrican Qin Dynasty. The Yamato dynasty also lent its name to the name Yamato (大和 in kana), a broad term that can at once refer to the country of Nippon, the Yamato people (the ethnic group that overwhelmingly comprises the Nipponian people), the supposed "Nipponian spirit" called the Yamato-damashii, and the idealisation of the perfect Nipponian woman known as the Yamato nadeshiko.

Foreign relations
Throughout its history, the United Solar Republics has continually maintained close (and often militarily allied) relations with democratic, progressive, and scientific-oriented states. The USR maintains diplomatic relations with nearly all states that it has come into contact with. The USR’s closer relations are maintained in a network of standing military alliances. The United Solar Republics enjoys special relationships with Shansekia, Cocentrica, the Alliance Star Confederation, Cravan, Pauldustllah, Karita, Parilisa, Ruccola, Hanover-Swabia, and Kasyurana and maintains its closest relations with these states, Ancient Terra, Edolia, Hallad, Praetonia, Van Luxemburg and fellow former United Alliance of Progressive States (UnAPS) members. Military alliance agreements are in place with Midlonia, ZMI, and The Freethinker Commonwealth as remnants of the Concordat alliance. In addition these relations, the USR is currently in the process of strengthening already-solid relations with Questaria, overturning a historical practice of ignoring relations in Haven.
Prevailing attitudes in the USR- in the government as well as in public opinion- heavily favor an internationalist approach to foreign policy. In particular, the USR currently and has historically practiced a system known as “hyperrationality”- the use of rationality as a means of foreign policy development almost to a fault, with the fixed goal of preserving and promoting the USR’s progressive ideals. This has led to a foreign policy approach focused around establishment of a strong aerospace force to maintain aerospace dominance and as a deterrent, combined with a strong preference for settling disputes through diplomacy. The trend of hyperrationality in foreign policy has allowed the USR to establish and maintain a status as a Great Power in international affairs. The hyperrationality policy has also been a staple of Solar first contact procedures, and has been the result of numerous good relations with nations upon first contact.
In addition to its own territories, the United Solar Republics acts as the protector for a number of different states as part of the terms of the Solar Commonwealth charter. These are the Technocratic Emirate, which has debated heavily for the past decade the possibility of joining completely the United Solar Republics, the Alliance Star Confederation, the North Karaini Union, and Edolia. The states of Serengeti and Ituriland, while nominally independent states which fall under the protection of the USR, are de facto Solar colonies.
