Tyrrhenia is a large "continental archipelago" located in the northern hemisphere, northeast of Tarquinia. Situated largely on the Mediterranican Plate, the region comprises more than 5,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. It has many climate zones and is home to a wide variety of peoples and cultures.

Etymology

The Byzantine word for other residents of the region was Τυρρήνιοι (Tyrrhēnioi) from which modern Tyrrhenians also drew the names Tyrrhēni (Tyrrans), Tyrrhēnia and Mare Tyrrhēnum (Tyrrhenian Sea).

Geography

Tyrrhenian continents

Tyrrhenia is comprised of four large continents and a number of smaller islands and archipelagos. The four continents are: Mediterranica,Mednordia, Waldenburg and Levantia. Levantia is the easternmost and the largest of the continents, and it's land is occupied by Fictions, Qualah,Great Byzantine Federation, Mykola, Zirilrath and Hyopria, and a large currently unclaimed area. The narrow Tyrrian Pass separates Levantia from Waldenburg to the west.

Tyrrhenia's terrain varies greatly from place to place. As already stated, land relief in Tyrrhenia shows great variation within relatively small areas. The northern regions are more mountainous, while moving south the terrain descends from the high Cloudspire Mountains, Apione Mountains, Medioratum Mountains and Licea, through hilly uplands, into broad, low souther plains, which are vast in the continent of Levantia. Continents such as the Mednordia and Mediterranica contain their own complex features, as does mainland Waldenburg itself, where the relief contains many plateaus, river valleys and basins that complicate the general trend.

Demographics

History

History of Tyrrhenia, is a turbulent one, as many wars and conflicts ravaged the region during the course of time.

Mediterranican Union

Original Flag of the Mediterranican Union

The Mediterranican Union (MU) was conceptualized during a regional summit held in Nuevo Italia. The Union charter held regulations regarding topics from border relaxation to standardized military munitions and was meant to bring the nations of Tyrrhenia together economically, socially and militarily.

The original incarnation of the MU lasted less than a year however. Only a few of the membership signed up to the charter as full members, while most were termed ‘partial members’ and only agreed to abide by certain articles stating the others conflicted with their national laws, regulations or customs. This ultimately meant the member nations of the Union grew distant from each other, each only recognizing the charter when it suited their government’s needs. Also, several months after the formation of the Union Neuvo Italia entered into a period of severe recession and civil unrest that soon lead to its take over by West Ponente. Multiple other member nations also suffered internal crisis as well shortly after this.

With clear indication that the MU was failing the remaining major powers of the Union (Aschenhyrst, Gataway, British Londinium, West Ponente, Olmedreca and Yallak) revisited the charter, scrapping much of the original document and then recreating it anew. The revised version redefined the purpose of the Union, turning it into an alliance for mutual protection and co-operation rather than an attempt to unite the region into a singular entity. The idea of ‘partial membership’ was also eliminated.

Revised Flag of the Mediterranican Union

The revitalized MU flourished and much of the region joined into the alliance when its new charter was announced. It gained such stature and power that, without any conscious attempts by the alliance, it soon found itself ruling Tyrrhenia de jure. A new city was built on the coast of the Mediterranican continent, named the Mediterranican Union International Zone, which served as the regions administrative capital and the site at which the MU Council would meet.

For some years the MU upheld is role of maintaining regional stability and fostering economic cooperation in Tyrrhenia. It was committed to safeguard the freedom and security of its member countries by political and military means and played an important role in crisis management and peacekeeping both internally and externally.

The downfall of the MU began towards the end of 2008. After internal disputes between member nations and a few inter-regional conflicts, some nations withdrew from the alliance and the remaining parties became distanced and mistrustful of each other. During the height of the Grand Alliance War in early 2009, the Mediterranican Union collapsed into civil war and is now officially defunct. The former members of the Mediterranican Union are listed below.

Grand Alliance War

Main article: Grand Alliance War

In late 2008 and early 2009, a coalition of nations from Gholgoth, supported by several regional collaborators, invaded Tyrrhenia. Though the exact reasons for the invasion are unknown, popular opinion in Coalition nations tends to side towards the idea that Gholgoth invaded without provocation. Because there is a measure of truth to this idea, it is difficult to pin down the causes of the Grand Alliance War.The Liberty Coalition was formed "to preserve the freedom of Tyrrhenia" and was headed predominately by Waldenburg. There were several major fronts in the conflict but the two largest were in Greston and Waldenburg.

War of the Waldenburger succession

With the death of the emperor of Waldenburg, the region erupted in conflict once more, with several powers inside and outside of the region vying for the open throne. The secession crisis and a power struggle between secular and religious authorities with Waldenburg came to head early in the autumn of 2009, drawing many neighboring nations into the conflict.

Vienna Convention

On February 2014 Mykolan Kaiser Franz Josef II invited several leaders of various Tyrrhenian nations to the capital of Mykola, Vienna, to discuss the size and scale of warfare between these nations. Discussions eventually moved toward the creation of an interregional justice system to punish war criminals. Father Korodev, member of the Augarian diplomatic party, exploded into a rant. The end result was mass disorder in the senate building. Several international delegates were arrested and detained by Mykolan Reichswächter. Father Korodev was physically and mentally tortured by the Mykolan security forces before being released at the behest of the Augurian Kaiser-Kanzler Otto Vitali.

Ex Nihilo

As revenge for a Yallakian terrorist attack on a Augarian city, Augarundus declared war on Yallak, and started the invasion of Yallak by mounting an assault on the border fortress of Yalaukhar.
