The Republic of Trawach is an island nation in Greater Dienstad. The island, inhabited by a small population of aboriginal people, was discovered by refugees from lands in the region in 1744. Shortly thereafter the island was declared a self-governing territory.

Trawach is notable for being a bilingual nation, with schools teaching both Trawacan and English to students. Technologically advanced and industrialized, the nation maintains a diversified economy that is heavily reliant on the use of the abundant natural resources held on the island; as well as international trade.

Trawach has been populated since the 14th century AD. There is little evidence of prehistoric hominids on the island. Trawach was inhabited by a band of native people before formal discovery for centuries. It is thought these natives arrived on Trawach from nearby now-uninhabited island groups. Trawach's discovery came from a group of English refugees who immediately colonized the island, breaking all ties with their homeland.

Trawach is comprised of seven states and one capital region. Trawach has an area of 5,078,620 square kilometers (1,960,866 square miles), or about one third of the area of Questers. The Republic of Trawach is a developed country, with a prosperous multicultural society and is considered to have high scores in areas of human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education, economic freedom and the protection of civil liberties and political rights.

Etymology

The name "Trawach" comes from early communications between the aboriginal people of the island and the English-speaking refugees. It is written that the aboriginals referred to the refugees as "Trawok." Trawok was then translated to a more phonetical version in the mid 1800's.

History

Main article: History of Trawach

Trawach was populated as early as 1300 by the aboriginal inhabitants, now referred to as "First Trawacans." Little is known about these earliest inhabitants aside from tales passed down to current generations.

In the year 1740, several citizens of local nations fled their homeland to find a more free place to live. It is said that these refugees originally intended to land somewhere in Haven, but landed on Trawach instead. With no infrastructure or knowledge of the land, these refugees essentially raised a nation out of nothing.

The capital city of Handelsstadt was established as a minor settlement in the early 1800's. Slavery existed on the island until its sovereignty in 1905.

Around 1925, the nation experienced an implosion of its economic system, resulting in a bloody civil war and the reestablishment of democratic rule only two years later. Industrialization reached full force on the island in 1948 when a major car company was established on the island. A major economic boom took place between 1950 and 1985. A spike in the nation's population was also observed. Between 1985 and 1999, the nation experienced a lackluster economy which rebounded in 2004. By 2008, the nation was experiencing another economic boom.

In 2008, the nation expanded its armed forces to a size of 1,250,000; a first for the nation. Due to the civil war in 1925, the armed forces had been abolished and replaced with a civil defense force. The new military was reorganized in early 2009. 2010 saw Trawach actively participating in several international organizations, including the IET and the Norheim Doctrine. Tariffs were reduced to an all-time low, and a much wider array of consumer products were made available. The 2009-2010 fiscal year was showing vast improvement over the 08-09 FY. Trawach was also participating in several international military exercises involving nations in Greater Dienstad during early 2010.

Government and politics

The nation's politics are dominated by the historic Central Party, which is a middle-right conservative party. The Pirate Party and the Socialist Party are gaining ground in congress however.

Trawach's government is a federal democratic republic, with the President acting as the head of state. As opposed to most other republics, the President has a fair amount of power in government. Many presidents are simply figureheads; Trawacan presidents are able to declare war without congressional approval and enact certain laws without the approval of the Supreme Court. However, a system of checks and balances prevents the President from overstepping his or her bounds and acting in a manner that could endanger the country or its people. A law prevents the government from abolishing democracy; it is explicitly written in Trawacan law that should a branch of the government abolish democracy that branch is nullified.

The government of Trawach is relatively weak compared to that of the state governments. There are multiple levels to the government, the main levels are Federal and State. The federal government is responsible for education, defense and the environment; while the state governments are left to make their own laws in line with the Constitution of Trawach, as well as fund other programs such as social welfare and law enforcement. Trawach could technically be considered a weak republic confederation.

Heading up the federal government's judicial branch is the Supreme Court which is tasked with making rulings based on the constitution. The legislative branch is headed by the unicameral 160-member Congress, tasked with making laws and amending the constitution.

Each state has its own Supreme Court, Congress and Governor's Office.

Law

Main article: Law of Trawach

Trawacan law is established through the Supreme Court. Court decisions are recorded to be later used by other judges as legal precedent. Unlike many other republics, there is no constitution that outlines citizens' rights and laws. Instead, laws are established by the Congress and Supreme Court, which are then recognized as federal laws. States may adopt these laws as their own or create their own. This has led to extensive variations between states regarding things as simple as traffic infractions. What is a felony in one state might be a civil offense in another. Congressional sessions and judicial sittings are mostly for the purpose of law-making. Due to the fact that there is no constitution outlining laws, there are literally thousands of laws at the federal level.

Generally, Trawacan law follows the common law system. The judicial branch has overall authority as to what is illegal and what isn't.

Enforcement of law is provided by the Trawacan National Police Service.

Trawach has a history of opting out of international groups. Trawach became a signatory of the Treaty of St. Freeksburg in 2010.

The armed forces of Trawach are a mid-sized force, comprised of 5,750,000 personnel. Of the 5.75 million, 1 million are reserve personnel. Trawach's military is a mandatory conscription service, with males being required to serve at the age of 18 or upon completion of high school. Females may join of their own volition. The minimum service commitment is two years. Currently, the government and military do not recognize conscientious objection. Personnel not wishing to serve in a combat unit may opt to join a rear-echelon unit.

Between 1926 and 2008 the armed forces of Trawach had been abolished due to the civil war in early 1925. Initially, the nation had no protection from foreign forces, so a small civil defense force was established to repel any invading armies. In 2007 the congress of Trawach felt the need to reestablish a permanent military force so as not to require aid from other nations' defense forces.

In March of 2010, an Islamic separatist group seized Agryrica Island, an island of Britarcaia. This has led to the Agryrica Island Crisis, still unresolved.

States

Trawach is divided into eight states; one of which is referred to as the Capital Region.

Geography and climate

Main article: Geography of Trawach

Trawach is the 24th largest country by land area, with a population density of 101.4 people/km². Trawach shares no land borders with any other nation, the closest nation is ??. Trawach is also the largest island country by area.

Trawach's geography is indicative of a subtropical island; relatively flat and very close to sea level. A large portion of the nation is mostly-uninhabited and largely unexplored. The area is located in the central portion of the southern mainland. The south-central part of the nation is relatively unexplored and densely forested with one of the world's largest untouched jungle ecosystems. The nation's soils are particularly fertile, but coastal soils tend to lack enough nitrogen to support commercial growth and harvesting.

The climate of the island is not dissimilar to that of a chaparral ecosystem. Summers are hot and humid and winters are wet and mild. The average temperature of the nation is 74°F. Average national rainfall totals are 159 inches per year.

The highest point in Trawach is Mount Fayhill (elevation 2,220m), and the lowest is Greenston Valley with an elevation of 53 meters below sea level. Trawach also has several small islands surrounding it, mostly uninhabited. These islands extend Trawach's Exclusive economic zone by several thousand square kilometers.

Trawach claims 12 nautical miles of territorial sea (22 kilometers), a contiguous zone of 24 nautical miles (44 kilometers), and an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers. Trawach does not claim a continental shelf.

Economy

Main article: Economy of Trawach

Before the economic collapse of 1925, Trawach enjoyed a very stable economy due to a heavy abundance of resources and because the island was quickly gaining a reputation as tourist haven. The collapse brought an end to most of Trawach's economic growth and sustainability.

1927 saw the stabilization of the economy again and marked the first period of extreme economic growth for the nation. The nation's first car company started the major industrialization of the nation in 1948. The industrialization period extended well into the 1970's. Between 1950 and 1985 a major economic boom occurred, paving the way for the nation's current strong and stable economy. A slight period of economic decline was observed between 1986 and 1999, however the economy once again rebounded and was at its 1985-level in 2004.

The currency of Trawach is the Trawach dollar (Ϯ), which currently trades at Ϯ1.8881 Trawach dollars to $1.0000 Universal Standard Dollars. Trawach's economy is considered post-industrial, however manufacturing is a key component to the overall economy of the republic.

Tourism

Main article: Tourism in Trawach

Prior to 1985 tourism was considered a very minor part of the overall economy. An government program was started in the late 1980's to increase tourism throughout the nation. Particularly, Agryrica was developed into a major tourist center complete with dozens of resorts, secluded beaches and two theme parks.

Due to Trawach being a stable nation in an easily-accessed and relatively peaceful region, foreign tourism profits now comprise 70% of the total tourism profits.

Trawach's tropical climate, ease of access and friendliness toward foreign nationals make it one of the most visited locations in Greater Dienstad.

Energy

Main article: Energy in Trawach

Trawach's energy consumption and production are regulated by the federal Department of Energy (DOE). Stemming from the DOE-backed Energy Act of 1993, a minimum of 70% of Trawach's consumed energy is renewable and/or emissions-free.

Although Trawach produces approximately 700,000 barrels of oil per day, most domestic vehicles (excluding military vehicles) run on E85 ethanol. Half of Trawach's E85 is produced locally, while the other half is imported from Tarquinia and Greater Dienstad. Domestic E85 is produced from sugar cane.

Electricity in Trawach is produced mainly (87%) from nuclear power plants. 7% is generated from hydroelectric sources, and the remaining six percent are produced from coal-fired plants. The government has mandated that all coal-fired plants are to be phased out by wind farms by the year 2013. More than 200 nuclear power plants make up the core of Trawach's energy production.

Transportation

Transportation has long been a focus of the Trawacan government. About 7% of Trawach's GDP is dedicated to the transportation sector. 72% of all passenger-miles are traveled by automobile. 17% of passenger miles are traveled by aircraft, ten percent by rail and 1% by ferry.

Trawach's national highway system links most major cities to one another. Most of the highway system is located within 100 miles of the shoreline due to the ruggedness of the southern interior part of the nation. State highways augment the national system and enable most locales to be linked to the federal highway system. Two highways, the T-1 and the T-2 are unlimited-speed, 10-lane high capacity superhighways that are located in the northern and southern (respectively) parts of the nation. These serve as links to the federal highway network that in turn link to state highways.

Air travel is facilitated by 20 major international airports and hundreds of smaller regional airports. Handelsstadt International Airport is the busiest airport in the nation in terms of passengers, aircraft movements and cargo.

Demographics

Trawach's 1910 census counted a total population of 5,000,000 citizens. Population growth exploded between 1930 and 2010 due to a sharp increase in immigration. The 2010 census revealed a population of 515 million.

According to the 2010 census, there are three main ethnic origins to which at least 100,000 citizens claim in their background. The largest ethnic group is the Anglos with 50.67%; the second largest being the aboriginal Trawacans with 32.33%. The Irish comprise 10%. Other smaller ethnic groups include the Jewish and Scottish.

Trawacan culture is heavily influenced by that of other Dienstadi and of the aboriginal peoples. The culture of Trawach is considered fairly diverse, due to the numerous different races and traditions brought to Trawach from other nations. Significant cultures present include Lyran, Lamonian, other Dienstadi, Havenic, Gothic, Novan and Tarquinian. The culture of Trawach has been described as a mosaic due to the checkered nature of the different cultures and their geographic distribution; for example, Arcand is home to the only concentration of Italian people.

Religion is considered an important facet of daily life in Trawach. 93% of all Trawacans belong to the Roman Catholic Church. Due to this massive religious majority, some tensions have arisen between religious groups. For instance, when the first mosque was opened in Handelsstadt, it was set ablaze by militant Catholics. These tensions have subsided in recent years due to awareness and outreach programs, as well as stiff penalties for discrimination.

The majority of Trawacans are white, with the second-largest group being Native Trawacan Aboriginal.
