Talk:Leftwich class guided missile frigate
From WikiStates
I think Os summed up the problems with the battering ram pretty well, but I'm more curious about the propulsion system. Why're you using an azipod in the first place and how do you figure that you get 38 knots from just two diesel "turbines" (which I'm reasonably sure don't exist)? — Zinaire →talk 06:40, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
- The Battering ram is not the primary weapon, that should be painfully obvious. It's a last resort weapon, if the ship is in battle and can not fall back, it can bash its way out. While that situation is not likely, I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Besides, it provides uniqueness to it.
- As for the engines, the Azipod uses an electric motor which is powered by the turbines. Those turbines are optimised to use diesel fuel, which can be done as the M1 Abrams's turbine engines shows. The main reason to use diesel is that it produces less greenhouse gases than kerosene from what I've been able to find.Belka 07:02, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

- The battering ram can only be used if the ship is actually in, you know, battering range. Rather crossing tens, if not hundreds, of kilometers of open ocean at full speed, all that fuel should really be used to retreat. No matter how difficult it will be to fall back, it's gonna be a lot safer than charging at the enemy. If the ship's even in a situation where using the ram will be necessary, there's no way it's gonna survive all the way to the target. And even if it does, it'll be a sitting duck for any other hostile ships in the area once it collides with the first one.

- You did a really great job of not answering my propulsion questions. I asked how you attained the listed speed and you gave no answer. I asked why you're using an azipod and you have no answer. Also, it's pretty ridiculous to be basing decisions like this on the environment. For one thing, it's the military; if you really didn't want to damage the earth, you wouldn't have one. Furthermore, there's not global warming in NSEarth, so that's not a particularly big deal. — Zinaire →talk 07:15, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

- Sorry about not answering, I'm trying to keep my head up from falling asleep and just rambled. Anyway, if you want to know how I got the speed, I just compared the Perry-Class & the LCS's top speeds and went with the middle. And given the BS I've seen allowed on NS by the big time RPers, a ship with 38 knot speed isn't much of a stretch. The reason for Azipods is that they're much more manuverible and they look better IMO than the normal shaft, prop, & rudder. And the environment issue just goes with my nation, reduce and/or eliminate greenhouse gases for a cleaner tomorrow; and be a contrast to my neighbor Birkaine, who should hold the title for most polluted in NS. XD

- As for the battering ram, I've already stated why I have it. You might not agree with me, that's ok, but tis my ship and I'll have it the way I want it. :)

- Why did you determine the speed like that? The only thing your ship has in common with the LCS is a single azipod. Otherwise, the propulsion systems and hullforms are totally different. Also, I'm really tired of all the "two wrongs make a right" arguments. Just because other players wank doesn't mean you should, even if it means being less competitive. You don't really want to RP with wankers anyway, so what's it matter if your equipment isn't as lulawesoem as theirs? As for the azipod, there's a reason that they're not used as the primary propulsion system on any RL warship. Even if it doesn't look as cool, I'd stick with a more conventional setup. — Zinaire →talk 07:44, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

- Why? Cause I was pressed for time and just went fuck it, go this route. As for the wankers, then all of NS are wankers save the few that use only RL ships. I didn't come here to NS for the boring, gotta make everything perfect, walls of text I see for most ships & stuff, I came to have fun while within reasonable boundries. And IIRC, several european nations have warships on the drawing board and will soon/already have steel laid down for construction.
