Formation

Geologic study shows that the islands were formed by a shifting hotspot in the Earth's mantle. This hotspot has since moved underneath the continent of Aerova and is responsible for the volcanic activity in the young Berdian Mountain Range. Original geologic analysis estimates that the oldest islands began to form some 86 million years ago. Most of the island volcanoes are no longer active, but some of the youngest islands are still active and erupt periodically. The hotspot has moved roughly northeast at the rate of 51 kilometers (32 miles) per million years. Hence the islands in the southwest of the archipelago are older and typically smaller, due to longer exposure to erosion.

History

The Staarvi Islands were brought under the control of the Empire of Valipac through a rather brutal island hopping campaign conducted during the Staarvi Unification War from 1570 to 1572.

Current Status

Currently, the Staarvi Islands are home to more than 1.2 million people, with the majority of them living on the largest and eastern-most island, Vahali. Most of the residents are Valipacian decsent, but as on the mainland, there is a small Manx minority becomes increasingly more populous as it moves eastward. that Oil platforms based in and around the islands provide jobs for most of the residents, and others work at large resorts for the wealthy travelers of Aerova. The oil platforms along with other offshore reserves provide for some 90% of Valipac's oil consumption. The largest oil company operating out of the Staarvi Islands is the Exporian Oil Company, which is a member of Coalition Oil."
