History
Leidangen (1267-1415)
The history of the Royal Cottish Navy began in 1267, when King $_name decreed that every coastal village and city should field and support one longship when ordered to by the King. This type of organization, called Leidangen is the first documented Navy in Cotland, and as a result, the Royal Cottish Navy considers its history to begin here. Leidangen was called up for service a grand total of 95 times in the next 150 years, and continued to function as the de facto Navy of Cotland until it was deemed obsolete in 1415 when newer shiptypes such as the Caravels, Carracks and Galleons began appearing and replacing the old War Cogs and Longships that had been in use up till now.
Aggression (1415-1859)
In 1415, King $_name decided to establish a semi-permanent force that could reign the seas of Haven, and that could carry out far more effective raids against rich, far-away places such as Prestonia and Doomingsland, often under the personal command of the King himself. As a result, in 1416, the Royal Cottish Navy ordered its first Caravels and Carracks. In 1420, the Royal Cottish Navy consisted of 127 Caravels, 226 Carracks and 150 smaller vessels.
Over the next few hundred years, the Royal Cottish Navy continued to modernize itself and spread fear on the High Seas, including the notable Raid on Redmond, Praetonian South Haven, a raid that is credited with triggering the buildup of the Praetonian Navy into a first rate naval power. A force of seven 32-gun frigates and eleven 24-gun corvettes sailed into the port, razed the small fort and sank the three Praetonian sloops that protected the city, and plundered the city of all its values. An estimated five thousand Praetonian men were killed during the raid, and values estimated to CRk 23 billion in today's currency looted by the Cottish Navy.
A Shift in Policy (1859-1902)
The year 1859 marked a shift in the operations of the Navy. With the ascension of King Olav IV, Cottish foreign policy shifted from raids and hit and run attacks upon foreign ports towards a less hostile, more cooperative stance. Over the next years, the Cottish Navy decommissioned most of its old warships and underwent a massive rebuilding process that saw the construction of battleships, battlecruisers, armoured cruisers and torpedo destroyers, following new naval doctrines that called for a High Seas Fleet to form battle lines instead of the hit and run raids that the Cottish Navy was accustomed to up till this point. In 1866, the Royal Cottish Naval Infantry was formed, establishing a professional maritime fighting force that specialized in amphibious assaults.
The Navy would get to test itself a little over 20 years later, then in 1882, Cotland joined the Pan-Havenic Twenty Year's War on the side of the Central Powers. Over the twenty years this conflict lasted, the Navy participated in a number of naval battles, where it preformed admirably. The Cottish Navy's triumphs included supporting an amphibious assault against the Questerian colony of $_name. Despite the outstanding efforts of the Navy, the Central Powers eventually lost the war, causing the Navy to fall into disrepair as internal unrest started to riddle the nation.

Rebuilding (1921-1980)
In 1921, the Cottish Navy began rising up after the humiliating defeat in the Twenty Year War. An ambitious building program was started, concentrating on completely replacing the old ships that had survived the war and the subsequent cutbacks with a total of 60 battleships, 70 heavy and 120 light cruisers, 500 destroyers and 200 submarines over the next fifteen years. The 1921 Building Program also called for the establishment of the Naval Aviation Branch, as the building program contained plans for a total of ten experimental aircraft carriers to be constructed. The aircraft carriers were a outstanding success, and a further 50 aircraft carriers were ordered at the expense of 20 battleships, which were cancelled.
By 1956, the Royal Cottish Navy took the step into the atomic age with the construction of the first nuclear-powered submarine in Cottish service, the HMS Utstein. This sparked a new ambitious building program that would see three new classes of nuclear-powered cruisers, destroyers and aircraft carriers, refitted battleships and aircraft carriers, and five different classes of submarines. By 1969, 40% of the Cottish Navy was nuclear-powered. By 1980, the number had risen to 63%.
Modern Time (1980-present)
Over the course of the late 20th century, the Navy participated in a number of operations that saw Cotland expand its frontiers once more, establishing new colonies in Trøndelag, Østfold and Strobovkysten.
In the late 1990s, Cotland joined the Royal Georgian League. This heralded a new era in the history of the Navy. The once-enemy Praetonia became one of Cotland's closest allies, and with the adoption of Praetonian-built warships and equipment by the Cottish Navy, a new era of cooperation has started.
Recently, the Cottish Navy has played its role in the cooperation with the allies in the Royal Georgian League and the Sovereign League in the Presto-Clandonian War, the Highworth War, and the ongoing League-HUNS War.

Organization
The High Seas Fleet is made up of 150 Fleet Carrier Battlegroups (Cottish: Flåtekampgruppe), who serve the role of the Line of Battle, while an additional 40 Amphibious Carrier Battlegroups (Cottish: Amfibiekampgruppe) carries out amphibious landings and lower intensity naval warfare activities such as sea control. Further ships and submarines operate independently or in more organic groupings such as Cruiser Squadrons and Frigate Squadrons.

Independent Formations
Frigate Squadrons - Conventionally powered Hel class frigates and Troll class corvettes do not operate with Fleet units, but are formed into squadrons of one or more ships to patrol sea lanes and hunt submarines. They are also sometimes used for fisheries protection and other light duties.
Cruiser Squadrons - Cruisers sometimes operate independently in squadrons or sometimes with Cavalier class destroyers.
Missile Boat Squadrons - Missile boats operate independently in squadrons in coastal waters, and are responsible for the close-in coastal defence of the Cottish coast.
Submarines - All diesel electric and many nuclear submarines operate independently interdicting enemy military and merchant shipping, and clearing the seas of enemy submarines.
