History

Origin

The Rosdivani archipelago, located in what is known locally as the Amoremer Ocean, was initially settled by a series of Polish and Ukranian diasporas in the thirteenth century, fleeing the advance of the Golden Horde. Tossed by storms and an unusual current caused by an abnormal period of global warming, these refugees found themselves cast upon several islands within the chain, the largest of which they named Serenity as a consequence of its peacefulness compared to both what they had fled and the trials of their journey.

These first Rosdivani (the name itself is of unclear origin, but the term is clearly attested to within three generations of settlement; many linguists believe that it is from an obscure and now lost Slavic dialect translating as "The Driven People") established several medieval kingdoms and republics. For the next three centuries, a brisk interisland trade developed with remarkably few wars compared to other areas of the world at this time. The prevailing theory for this relative era of peace is that there was no benefit to the costs when the island chain was still mostly unsettled.

Society in the Middle Ages

Although coming from a feudal society, serfdom and all but some vestigial elements of feudalism quickly died away upon colonization of the Rosdivani islands. Without the threat of an external invading force, the rationale for servile work in exchange for promise of protection evaporated. Further, very little of the ancestral nobility had come with the refugees, most attempting to fight (and in the process dying) against the expansion of the Horde. While many of the republics and kingdoms created their own nobility from among the descendants of the refugees, these post-settlement noble titles always had a sense of nouveau riche to them.

The basis of medieval Rosdivani society was little different from the contemporary, being focused around the community, beginning with the family as the smallest element. On the largest island, home to the Republic of Serenity, nobles, although created, served in the function that mayors and governors serve today, acting as organizers and legislators to deal with problems or other issues requiring a focused and combined effort. This would later be taken up as a model by many of the surrounding kingdoms and republics and be imposed upon the remainder following the Wars of Unification.

Currency

The only legal tender recognized in the Commonwealth of Rosdivan is the pent, issued by the central government as one of its few duties. Until 1947 the currency was based upon the gold standard, but effective January 1st, 1947, the pent was removed from the gold standard and became a fiat currency. The pent is divided into one hundred cents. In a departure from most modern currencies, the Commonwealth of Rosdivan still does not issue paper bills. This, along with the ordinary pressures of extreme urbanization and high populations, has helped to further movement towards a cashless society; however, coins still remain in popular use and will remain so for the foreseeable future.
