Qazox, formerly known as the Most Serene Republic of Qazox, is the oldest nation within The Q Continuum, and one of the most recognized sporting nations in the NSUniverse.

The nation has a long and deep history and a rather unique religion, culture and calendar. The following is a brief overview of Qazoxian history with major milestones and a basic look at the cultural, governmental, and sporting events that have shaped the nation.

Early History Of Qazox

The earliest found archeologial evidence for humans living in Qazox goes back to 25,000 years. The tribes were mostly Hunter-Gathers and no real civilization appeared until approximately 1,500 years ago.

Around the year 500, the first Qazian tribes began building small towns and villages where the people kept oxen and began farming. By 1007, most of the tribes were united by Queen Signa-Une under one ruler for the first time. The Signa Clan ruled the Qazian Tribes for nearly 450 years without any outside contact. By the time white settlers appeared, the Qazian peoples had a late Middle ages of technology.

The Most Serene Republic

Qazox was first visited by Goran Oxfield and his pet Ox Joe on July 2nd, 1443. Goran Oxfield and his ox Joe had came to the land from parts unknown, but with in 2 days Goran was near death and had to kill Joe for food. Goran lit a fire and started to cook the meat when a woman appered. Curious, Goran asked her if she had a name. She replied Qaz-ox. Goran didn't understand Qazian and thought that was her name, when in Qazian it means "Hey idiot, if you just walked 400 feet into the forest and met my people, you would not of had to kill your ox." Goran and the woman, whose real name was Signa, went back to the village. In September of 1444, Charles Feld and his Settlers had 're-found' Qazox and found Goran amongst the natives. Goran had learned Qazian and served as a translator between the two peoples. The 2 different people lived peacefully, even after Goran's death in 1456. However by May of 1465, the friction between the white settlers and the Qazian tribe reached a boiling point as some tribe members killed some settlers over the fact that the tribe had started worshipping Goran as their God. A two-month long battle between the two sides wound up with King Signa-Ke, the last Qazian King, dead and the tribe banished to the west. Charles Feld, on July 2nd, 1465, promptly installed himself as ruler renaming himself Viscar Charles and declared the country to be The Most Serene Republic of Qazox. The historical footnote is that the white settlers began to worship Goran as a God as well, before Hoofaran, Goran's son by Signa (King Signa-Ke's daughter and presumptive Heir to the throne) introduced Qazian as the offical religion in 1478. By the time Viscar Charles II came to power after his father's death in 1486, peace was made between the Qazian tribe and the settlers, a peace which would last for almost 75 years

The Qazian Uprising

In 1559, Viscar Charles IV had decreed that all land belonging to the Qazian tribe west of the River Goran beonged to the settlers, setting off an uprising amongst the Western Tribes. The Western Tribes fought for almost five years against the Eastern tribes and the settlers. The fighting was admonished by the newly-elected head of the Church of Qazian: Holy Ox Oxen I Oliver Newbern. The western tribes assassinated Viscar Charles IV in 1564, and the Holy Ox took over the Country. He made peace between the two factions, and give the territory they fought over to the Eastern Tribes. However this didn't placate the Western tribes and on November 3, 1564, the Western tribes declared themselves independent of Qazox, moved west of Lake Porter and became the nation of Green wombat. The two rival countries kept to themselves until 1649 when war broke out between the two nations.

Lake Porter War

In March of 1649 a message was received in Qazox City from a group of settlers near Lake Porter in the western part of the country. Apparently a settler from Green Wombat had stolen an Ox from one of the Qazoxian settlers. The Government was quick to respond and by August 1649 war broke out between the two countries. Eventually it was found out that the Ox was not stolen as originally thought, but had been eaten by a wolf. But by then the 2 countries were so involved in the war that it took 7 years to stop. On May 24, 1656 both countries agreed to a peace treaty and Qazox took majority control of the Lake Porter Region. After the Lake Porter War, Qazox ruled the eastern and southern parts of the Q Continuum until the Insaneican Uprising of 1687.

Aftermath of the Civil War

The nation of Qazox was fractured clearly down secular and religous lines after the war and by the end of the year a new government was formed with the Holy Ox as a religious Figurehead and a new President in charge of the running of the nation.

By 1737, the nation decided to unilaterally give its remaining territories independence, thereby creating the countries of Pool Shrimpers, Piscodemons and Wickedable.

History of Qazox 1737-1887

On November 5, 1738, gold was found by the city now know as Las Vitas, setting off the Vitas Gold Rush of '38. Many Qazoxians and others from around the region rushed to the hills of Vitas Mountain (Tallest Peak in Qazox at 19,834 ft). The gold rush ended rather quickly and by 1744, most of the gold found was mined out and left aproximately 100,000 people without jobs. In January 1743, newly elected President Charles Toombs, who had beaten 2-time incumbent Rodney Bousquet in a very closely contested race, declared that the laid off workers could not sue the government for 'unemployment wages'. President Toombs was quoted as saying that "If those who will not work ask for money from the government, what's to stop everybody for asking for money?" Due to this unpopular stance, aproximately 35,000 unemployed workers marched on the capitol in May of 1746 and set off was became known as Toomb's Grave. The exact circumstances of what started the riots is not known, but it is assumed that the police over-recated and started shooting the protestors. This act of the police was not authorized and was in fact lamemted by President Toombs, but as the old saying goes 'it happened on his watch'. The riots which began in Qazox City soon spread to other cities and on August 26th, 1746, President Toombs had dissolved the Constitution and declared Martial Law in all of Qazox. The country seemd to be heading towards a 2nd civil war within 60 years, when on November 9, 1746, Oxen VII, Neal Temblador, gave his Pika City Address (see below). In the short, but powerful speech, Oxen VII spoke out not only about the injustices of poverty but the injustices of racism and women's rights. The speech proved popular as most of the riots quieted down, and on May 17th, 1748, a new Constitution was passed providing equal treatment for all persons and that the welfare of the country's people will be the primary concern of the government.

I truly believe that all people are created equal and as such we must treat all people equally. If one of us suffers, then we all suffer. If one of us is poor, we are all poor. I have a dream in which all children regardless of wealth, race, color or sex shall not be discriminated against. One nation divided against itself cannot stand and will surely fall. This nation must learn from the mistakes of our and other's past and build a glorious future. - Pika City Address ”

In 1769, Qazox started to come out of its shell politically and regionally, signing a mutual-protection pact with the Nation of Pool Shrimpers. The pact was signed partly due to the Piscodemon-Insaneindahead War which lasted from 1761-63. Many Pool Shrimpers fled across the boder to escape the war which was beginning to spill into Pool Shrimper territory. With the MPP signed, both Piscodemons and Insaneindahead asked for Qazox' help in the War, but President Allen K. Tiller, in one of his last acts as president, helped end the war. Due to his brilliant negotation, the Tiller Award for Peace was created in his honor, after his death in 1773.

Second Qazoxian Civil War and aftermath

After years of severe government corruption and rampant unemployment, on January 5th, 1917, President Ryan Foley was assassinated by Jaques Herr, while giving a speech in Fromburg. At roughly the same time as the President's assassination, Vice-President Wendi Gather was found dead at her home in Saint Nash. As word of the President's assassination, and the sudden death of the Vice-President filled the airwaves of the country, the Senate and the Judiciary Court met, as required by law, to begin to elect a new president, a bomb planted under the speaker's lecturn went off killing all 68 officals and 25 members of the media. Within a few hours the top civil leaders in the country were dead. Holy Oxen XXXIX Salvatore Colling, as prescribed by law had become the new leader of the country. By 12:00 pm that day a total of 10 car bombs exploded in various cites around Qazox, killing over 200 persons. Within 2 hours of the assassination and bombing, Qazox was placed under martial law. The citzens of the country, already fed up after years of economic depression, began to fight back, joining with the Terroist group, Golden Dusk, setting off the Second Qazoxian Civil War. However the 2nd Civil War never fully developed into a major war, and by June of 1918, most of the rebels had either been captured or killed.

In 1927, Daniel Renoir started a fascist movement within Qazox, aimed at both returning Qazox from a capitialist deomcratic state, into a an agricultural theocracy. Within 5 years, he lead a coup against sitting president Henrietta Frewley and declared that Qazox was now a Fascist state, and Assumed the title of Fuhur.

In 1932, and after the assumption of the Presidency by Renoir, an underground faction of soldiers and remants of the Golden Dusk had been waging a guerilla war to retake the control of the nation from Renoir.

The Q Continuum War of 1943

On October 13th, 1943, Qazox's leader, Daniel Renoir, withdrew Qazox from all treaties with its fellow nations. At the stroke of midnight on October 14th, Qazoxian troops and military vehiles invaded the countries of Sawed, Moonkins, and Certifiably insane, while at the same time, Sativaville invaded the nation of Wickedable. On October 15th, The nations of Poolshrimpers, Piscodemons and Insaneindahead formed a coalition to prevent a invasion by Qazox from the south. Prux and Green wombat declared themselves neutral and promptly asked for foreign aid for the attacked nations.

The Noveen Conjuction of 2013

On March 12, 2013 the Sol planetary system had a Noveen Conjuction which caused all dates to revert to January 1st, 1900 in the Q Continuum. (for more info click on the Noveen Conjuction above) However, top scientists have declared the Conjunction an once in a billion year event, and once the Q Continuum once again reaches the date of March 12, 2013, nothing should occur.

Government in Qazox

The Government of Qazox is made up of a President,a Judiciary Court and a bicameral legislature. the Senate which is comprised of 51 people (so there can't be a tie). The senate is comprised of 17 clergy (appointed by the Holy Ox), the governors of the 17 regions, and 17 Senators directly voted on by the 17 regions. The House of Commons has 313 members directly voted upon by the people themselves according to region. The President has a 5 year term in office and can run up to 3 times for a maximum of 15 years in office. The Senators are voted upon every 7 years and can only be in office for 2 terms. The governors of each region are elected to a 4 year term and can be re-elected up to 3 times for a 12 year max. The Clergy serve for the lifetime of the Holy Ox who appointed them, when the Holy Ox dies, the new Holy Ox must appoint 17 new Clergy to the Senate within 40 days of his ascending the Oxency. The Commoners (as they are called) serve a 3 year term with a maximum of 15 years to serve.

After the 2nd Civil War, the Presidency was abolished and an office of State Leader, who is elected directly from the legislature, was created. The State Leader cannot be from the military, the Legislature itself or the priesthood. The people nominate 2 canidates and the legislature votes on them. There is no current term limit for this office, but a current bill in the legislature will limit the office to a single 6-year term, with no re-elections of the State Leader. In 1924, the Legislature re-instated the office of president with a single 8-yr term. The first election will take place in 1927 under these new rules. Also in 1927, the House of Commons increased it's membership to 313 persons. Upon the return of the Presidency in 1945, Presidents have a 6-year term, with a maximum of 3 terms served, either consecutive or total.

Each election year in May, the 3 major political parties The Oxian Party (RL equivalent=Democrats), The Jovian Party (RL Equivalent=Republicans) , and the Minsk Party (RL Equivalent=Socialists) each hold their Nomination conventions. The candidates are voted upon in multiple rounds with the lowest nominee dropped after each round. If no canidate has recieved a 52% majority of the votes in the final round, then the nominee with the most votes will be the canidate. In the Oxian Party there are 38 Delegates, meaning 20 votes ensures nomination. In the Jovian Party, there are 35 delegates, with 19 votes ensuring nomination. In the Minsk Party, there are 41 delegates, requiring 22 votes to clinch the nomination.

On every 3rd Wednesday of the month of September is election day. There 17 regions in Qazox, and the canidate that recieve the most votes in each region earns 50% of the Commoners' votes from that region. The 2nd place canidate recieves 33%, while the 3rd place recieves 17%. The percentages are counted up and the canidate with either 50.1% (157) of the 313 total Commoners or the highest % of total Commoners wins the election. Only once has the delegate with the highest % of Commoners not won the presidency (The 1900 election), but recent consitutional admendments have voided that particular flaw. Originally, the president had a 5 year term in office and could run up to 3 times for a maximum of 15 years in office. In 1900 this was abolished and the president was goven a single 15-yr term. In 1927, this was reduced to a single 8-yr term. Since 1900, a president cannot be re-elected. The President was inaugrated on April 1st until 1800, when it was moved to October 15th, approximately 1 month after the election.

Senate

The Qazoxian Senate is comprised of 54 members. 18 are elected from each of the 18 regions called Regional Senators, the 18 regional Governors and 18 clergymen appointed by the Holy Oxen of Qazox. The governors of each region are elected to a 4 year term and can be re-elected up to 3 times for a 12 year max. The Senators are voted upon every 7 years and can only be in office for 2 terms. The Clergy serve for the lifetime of the Holy Ox who appointed them to the Senate. When the Holy Ox dies, the new Holy Ox must appoint 18 new Clergy to the Senate within 50 days of his ascending the Oxency. All members of the Senate start their term on October 16th, except for the clergymen who start their term on the 50th day after the passing of the Holy Ox.

House of Commons

Originally consisting of 300 members, in 1927 the number was increased to 313, to match the number of Presisdential Delegates. Each of the Commoners (as they are called) serve a 3 year term with a maximum of 15 years to serve. The House of Commons were directly voted upon by the people them selves with no regard to region. But in 1927 this was scraped and the number of presidential delegates is now the number of Commoners for each region. The House of Commons in fact votes for the president, according to the votes of the region they are elected from. By law no person with a yearly income of over 40,000 Zaqs can be elected to the House, truly making it a House of Commons. All members of the Hous of Commons start their term on October 16th.

How a bill becomes law in Qazox

The easiest way is the House of Commons, in which all 313 members are working class citizens, proposes a bill and they vote on it. The bill must passby a vote margin of 172-141 or greater (55%). The bill then goes to the Senate where it is voted on and must pass with a vote of the 27-24 or greater. If a bill does pass both houses, it then goes to the president who must sign it or veto it with in 10 days. If the president vetoes the bill, it goes back to a joint session of both houses and if it passes with a vote margin of 200-164 or greater (55%) then it will become law.

The second way is a bit complcated. A bill can become law if at least 5,000 people in each region sign a petition. The petition will then be voted upon by the people in a national referendum to take place within 45 days of being confirmed. If the petition recieves a simple majority of votes it will become law.

All laws can be made null and void by petition and a national vote. All laws must also not contradict the Holy Book of Hoofanan.

Political Divisions

Qazox comprises of 21 states, including smaller islands, which are: Axen, Bruxen, Chuia, Grav, Guania, Joeda, Kibnash, Northland Territory, Porter, Qazia, Recife, Redina, Rinake, Saxer, Valhalla, Vitalia, Vogia and York.

Religion

The primary religion of Qazox is the Qazian Religion. Qazian was founded in 1475 by Hoofaran the son of Signa and Goran Oxfield the founder of Qazox. The Holy Ox is the spiritual leader and figurehead ruler of the country. A Holy Ox is elected within 20 days of the death of his predecessor. Once elected, The Holy Ox serves until his death or retirement, though none have ever retired as of this date. The Holy Book of Hoofaran is the Qazian equalivalent of the RL Bible. According to the 1st chapter of the Holy Book; Hoofaran was visited by the spirit of his father Goran Oxfield, who appeared to him in a dream after eating rutabegas. The Holy Book of Hoofaran is the spritual guide to life in Qazox and 98% of the population follow its precepts in varing degrees of adherence, even the ones that seemingly contradict themselves.

Most scholars belive that Hoofaran had a bad nightmare after eating too many rutabegas and that the Holy Book is just a scam to make people eat rutabegas, but most of those scholars have nightmares from eating too many rutabegas so they largely ignored. They also believe that Goran Oxfield hade an unhealthy obsession about Oxen and his son may have inherited the same obsession.

The only other animal mentioned in the Holy Book of Hoofaran is the Wombat. According to outside religous scholars, the wombat is the Qazoxian version of the devil. According to Chief Hanky-Panky Wizzinator of the Qazian tribe, a wombat actually told Goran to eat his ox Joe, but since no one alive today can confirm this, it may just be a legend.

Geography

Climate

The Climate of Qazox is one of a usual Temperate Zone. In the Capital, Qazox City, the average High/Low temperature in July is 89F/65F and in January the High/Low is 37F/20F. The highest temerature ever recorded was 113F on August 6, 1878 in Lake Porter City and the coldest temperature was -51F on December 31, 1866 in Bruxen. The Average percipitation in Qazox City is 21.8" in January and 10.9" in July.

Qazox has had a varied history in International sports.

Qazox has competed in every World Cup Qualification from World Cup 27 until the present (World Cup 48). Qazox has qualified for the World Cup on 16 occasions, and each of the last 14, and had advanced to the QuarterFinals of World Cup 41 and 48, marking the best finish for the team.

Qazox has also competed in all editons of the World Cups of Hockey, which was was previously known as the Aglukark-Cherry Cup (in which Qazox competed twice), winning the 4th and 6th editions of the tournement. Qazox hosted the 7th edition of the WCoH, reaching the finals, but losing to Valanora in the final.

Qazox is the de facto founder of the World Baseball Classic, and has hosted 4 editions of the event (No. 1, 4, 5 and 10); and winning 3 Championships, the 6th and 8th and 9th editions of the event.

Qazox is the founder of the Tour de Qazox, which was a national race until 1914, when it was opened to international riders. Qazox has also founded the Oxen Cup, originally intended to be a Cup of Harmony for the Women's World Cup, but is now a fully international competition, occuring two years after the World Cup.

Qaazox competed in all 11 of the Women's World Cups, before the WCC lifted the ban on female players in the World Cup itself. Qazox won 3 WWC titles, (WWC's 4, 6 and 9) and hosted the final edition of the event, WWC11, its first major international hosting of a tourney.

A new Qazoxian Sports Festival, featuring less commonly played sports in Qazox has recently been started, in hopes of bringing these sports more attention. A winter version was started due to the sucess of the original festival.

In GridIron or American Football, Qazox has participated in all of the GridIron championships, the first being the Gridiron World Championships, later being called the World Bowl. Qazox won the 3rd edition of the World Bowl, defeating Dancougar in the championship. Qazox hosted World Bowl IV.

Qazox Military

Qazox does have quite a modern military, with currently just over 2,800,000 active duty personnel, and a capacity of 7,000,000 in total reserves. The Army is the largest of the Six branches of the military, with approximately 1,200,000 personnel. The Militia is the smallest branch of the Military with only 60,000 personnel.
