NationStates is a popular, online nation-building game at http://www.nationstates.net/

A player creates one or more fictional nations. The NS game provides a (possibly amusing) description of each nation, and ranks all nations by 'Civil Rights', 'Economy' and 'Political Freedoms'. The World Census compares all nations. A player can affect its nation by deciding issues, or by participating in the World Assembly.

Players can also roleplay their nations. Roleplay never affects the description or rank in game, but roleplay is the only way to hold national elections, make exports, fight wars, play football, or otherwise explore their NS nations beyond the limits of the game. Players can also create wiki pages about their nations.

National creation

To play NationStates, one must create a nation. This requires the player to fill a two-page form with information about a new, fictional nation.

  1. The first page asks for a national name, currency, animal, and motto; and also asks the player to borrow a national flag from a real nation, and to choose a 'History' and a 'Government Style' from the choices in menus. Because the new nation is a web site account, the first page also requests a password and an optional email address.[1]
  2. The second page asks some optional questions about the political situation in the new nation, and presents a user agreement.[1]

A nation is necessary to play the game, and to post in the NS forums.

Population growth

The population of each nation will gradually increase. One can use population to benchmark how long a nation existed in the game. For example, each nation must reach 500 million population before it can submit new issues.[1]
