The Military of Trawach (collectively known as the Armed Forces of Trawach, abbreviated as AFT) is the national defense force of the Republic of Trawach. It is comprised of three branches; the Army, Navy, and Air Force. As of 2010, the AFT had 5,000,000 personnel total, counting reserve forces.
The headquarters of the AFT is located at the Department of Defense Building in Handelsstadt.
The main role of the Armed Forces of Trawach is military operations other than war, such as peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, noncombatant evacuation operations, protection of shipping and combating terrorism; however the AFT is capable of war if necessary. Recently, the AFT has experienced a shift in role from military operations other than war to a more capable offensive role.
The AFT is subject to civilian control.
Trawach is number 14th in terms of active troops per 1000 citizens and number 22 in terms of total troops per 1000 citizens.
Due to Trawach's naval emphasis, the AFT elected to adopt ODELANG, replacing the NATO Phonetic Alphabet. The transition was made in 2010.

History
The AFT was formed in 1906 as the Trawach Army; containing both an army and navy. It was later expanded in 1919 to contain an air wing. The army was later disbanded in 1926 as a result of the civil war. As far as 1995 the government was making plans to reinstate the military as a national institution. In 2007 the government officially announced the reestablishment of the military and by 2008 it was graduating the first members of basic training. In 2009 the military academies began graduating the first officers.
Due to the abolition of the armed forces between 1926 and 2008, the Coast Guard was responsible for the defense of the nation as a civilian law enforcement agency. The Coast Guard assisted in the initial training of the first batches of recruits at the academies and at newly-constructed and established military bases.
Personnel
As of 2008, there were 5,000,000 personnel serving in the Armed Forces of Trawach, counting the 1,000,000 reserve personnel. Over 93,000 civilians serve in the Department of Defense and various areas in each branch. It is a mixed volunteer/conscripted military, and wider-spectrum conscription may be authorized by an act of the government.
As in most militaries, members of the AFT hold a rank; either that of enlisted or officer, and may be promoted.
Recruitment
The Trawacan government mandates that all male citizens, upon turning 18 years old, must serve a minimum of two years of non-combat service. Those that choose to remain enlisted for more than two years may join a combat unit.
Female citizens may join at their own will, but are not usually accepted into combat units.
All citizens at the age of 17 who have finished high school or have a GED may enlist into the armed forces with parental consent.
Demographic controversies
Though women may serve as pilots, military police officers and aboard naval vessels, female service members are prohibited from intentionally being assigned to certain combat positions and service on submarines.
Unlike many other militaries, homosexual, bisexual and transgender citizens are allowed to serve in the military, but are subject to rules similar to those that govern female personnel.
Personnel stationing
Overseas
Attached to the Lyran 4th Order is the Air Force's Quick Reaction Force, the Army's 7th Armored Division, 12th Infantry Division and 2nd Support Division; and the Navy's 6th Fleet (Regional Fleet V).
Domestically
Nearly all of the AFT is stationed domestically at over 40 military facilities across the nation.
Foreign forces
Currently, the United States of PA and Lyras have military bases in Trawach.
Types of personnel
Enlisted
Prospective service members are often recruited from high school and college, the target age being those ages 18 to 28. With the permission of a parent or guardian, applicants can enlist at the age of 17 if they have received a high school diploma or a GED.
After enlistment, new recruits undergo basic training to prepare for the rigors of combat, followed by schooling in their primary Military Occupation (MO) at any of the four MO training facilities in Trawach. Each branch conducts basic training differently.
Initially, recruits without higher education or college degrees will hold the pay grade of E1, and will be elevated to E2 usually soon after the completion of basic training. Different services have different incentive programs for enlistees, such as higher initial ranks for college credit and referring friends who go on to enlist as well.
There are several different authorized pay grade advancement requirements in each junior enlisted rank category (E1 to E3), which differ by branch. Promotion through the junior enlisted ranks occurs upon attaining a specified number of years of service (which can be waived by the soldier's chain of command), a specified level of technical proficiency, and/or maintenance of good conduct. Promotion can be denied by with reason.
Non-commissioned officers
With very few exceptions, becoming a non-commissioned officer (NCO) in the AFT is accomplished by progression through the lower enlisted ranks. Unlike other militaries, promotion to NCO is non-competitive. NCO ranks begin at E4 or E5.
Commissioned officers
There are three common ways to become a commissioned officer in the AFT; although there are certain circumstances in which an NCO may be promoted outside of these methods:
- Trawacan War College - NCO's and enlisted personnel who have completed four years of education at the Trawacan War College become eligible for promotion to the rank of a commissioned officer.
- Direct commission - civilians who have special skills that are critical to sustaining military operations and supporting troops may receive direct commissions. These officers occupy leadership positions in the following areas: law, medicine, dentistry, nurse corps, intelligence, supply-logistics-transportation, engineering, public affairs, chaplain corps, oceanography, and others.
- Battlefield commission - Under certain conditions, enlisted personnel who have skills that separate them from their peers can become officers by direct commissioning of a commander so authorized to grant them. This type of commission is rarely granted and is reserved only for the most exceptional enlisted personnel; it is done on an ad hoc basis, typically only in wartime. No direct battlefield commissions have ever been awarded.
5-Star ranking
One senior commissioned officer is chosen every three years by the president to serve as the internal head of the armed forces. The role of the 5-Star General (Fleet Admiral in the case of the navy) is to provide military consultation to the president and congress, in addition to serving as the most senior military officer.
Structure
The head of the Trawacan military is the President, in his or her role as Commander-in-Chief. The role is mainly ceremonial, but the president has several powers afforded to him or her, enabling the president to utilize the armed forces at his or her will. The constitution places most of the military's control in the hands of the Secretary of Defense. Subordinate to the Secretary of Defense is the appointed 5-Star General; the military's highest rank.
Military commands
At present, the AFT has three military commands:
Capital Command
The Capital Command (CAPITALCOMM) is the smallest command, garrisoned at the Trawacan Department of Defense Building in Handelsstadt. The Capital Command is mainly comprised of civilian personnel. Main units include the president's ceremonial guard, intelligence units and a small defense contingent responsible for the protection of the Capital Region's airspace and maritime traffic.
Southern Command
The Southern Command (SOUTHCOMM) is responsible for the largest land area of the three commands; including the states of Arcand, Seguanaia and Minandand.
Northern Command
The Northern Command (NORTHCOMM) is responsible for the states of Tyrovene, Danivor, Manennas and Britarcaia.
Branches
The AFT is comprised of three branches: the Army, Navy and Air Force. Contained under the Department of Defense is the Trawacan Armed Forces Reserve (TAFR), made up of personnel from each branch. The TAFR is not considered a branch.
Army
The Army is the 2nd largest branch of the military after the Navy. The Army is responsible for the defense of Trawacan lands and if necessary, land invasion and land warfare in foreign nations. The Army has 1.75 million active personnel, with a limit of 340,000 personnel able to be drawn from the reserve pool. Of the branches, the Army operates the most equipment, with over 200,000 individual vehicles and countless firearms and artillery pieces. The army is also the military's most-used branch, with personnel often deployed to regional disasters and training exercises. Army personnel are trained to be air-dropped by the Air Force, or landed by naval assets. In addition, the Army trains the Navy's naval infantry component for land warfare operations.
The Army is commanded by General Victor Edward Emmanuel.
Navy
The Navy is the military's largest branch. It is a blue-water navy capable of all-out naval warfare. The Navy is responsible for the defense of Trawacan waters and if necessary, maritime power projection and combat outside of foreign nations. The Navy has its own air wing capable of waging aerial warfare without the need for the Air Force. The Navy also provides humanitarian support with its fleet of two hospital ships. The Navy is responsible for landing Army troops and equipment with their fleet of 190 Zubr-class landing craft. In addition to the fleet and subsurface component of the Navy, the Navy is also the parent branch for a division of naval infantry and the Coast Guard. The Navy is eligible to draw 330,000 personnel from the reserve pool. There are currently 2 million active duty personnel serving in the Navy.
The Navy is commanded by Admiral Jeffrey Landon Schmidt.
Air Force
The Air Force is the military's smallest branch. It is tasked with protecting the sovereign airspace around Trawach and if necessary, waging aerial combat against enemy land, naval, and air forces. Also included in the Air Force's responsibilities is managing and monitoring the small satellite network from three bases across the nation. The Air Force is also responsible for air-dropping Army personnel and supplies, as well as providing transport for the Special Forces Regiment. The Air Force is eligible to draw 330,000 personnel from the reserve pool.
The Air Force also operates (in cooperation with the Navy) several coastal air and sea defense stations at six locations around Trawach. It also operates a small civilian-staffed civilian air patrol generally associated with domestic non-military search and rescue operations and cargo ferrying.
The Air Force is commanded by Air Chief Marshal Melissa Victoria Schroeder.
Special forces
The AFT has a joint special forces unit, the Trawacan Special Forces Regiment. These 5,000 personnel are selected from each branch and 200 personnel are hand-picked from the Military Health Services (these personnel are given special forces training and are listed as combat doctors). The Special Forces Regiment does utilize special equipment, but is barred from purchasing special vehicles that due to the concern that purchasing special vehicles and aircraft for a seldom-used regiment would be far too expensive. Instead, the SFR utilizes existing TAF vehicles and aircraft to perform their missions.
Special forces personnel undergo 20 weeks of tactical training including martial arts, foreign weapons operation and maintenance, battlefield medicine, advanced communications, advanced navigation, human tracking, covert warfare, political science, geography, advanced survival tactics, communications/signals intelligence, intelligence gathering, torture resistance and psychological warfare.
The Special Forces Regiment is commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Hank Omar Withers.
Reserves
The TAFR is responsible for maintaining a healthy reserve force and national guard for use during times of peace, as well as for reinforcing regular military units. There are 1,000,000 personnel serving in the TAFR.
Primary reserve
Approximately 600,000 personnel comprise the primary reserve contingent of the TAFR. These personnel are trained to the level of and are interchangeable with their active duty counterparts, and are posted to TAF operations or duties on a casual or ongoing basis. The group is commanded by a Major General selected from the primary reserve component.
Supplementary reserve
The primary reserve force is enlarged by the supplementary reserve contingent, which comprises a voluntary call-up list for trained former TAF regular- and reserve-force personnel who can be considered for reactivation in the event of a national emergency. There are approximately 340,000 Supplementary Reserves.
Reserve Rangers
The Reserve Rangers form a critical expeditionary force providing surveillance and patrol services in the rugged and remote inland areas. Approximately 10,000 personnel serve in the Reserve Rangers.
Military Health Services
The Trawacan Military Health Services is a subunit of the Trawacan Armed Forces Reserve responsible for providing major medical care both stateside and abroad for military service members. Personnel are not combat trained and are grouped into the reserve force instead of being embedded in an active duty division. There are 50,000 personnel serving in the Military Health Services.
Uniform
Dress uniforms are unique; with the Army's being a red-themed outfit, the Navy's a white-themed outfit and the Air Force's a blue themed outfit.
Combat uniforms are provided by Lyran Arms, and include the Lyran Multi-spectral disruptive pattern camouflage uniform, BALCOTH advanced helmets, Dauntless ballistic armor, Blacktalon combat gloves and Mamba tactical boots. Over seven million of these combat uniforms were acquired by the military in 2010.
Military expenditures
The congress of Trawach gives the federal government exclusive responsibility for national defense through the military and expenditures are thus outlined in the federal budget. For the 2009-2010 fiscal year the amount allocated for defense spending was $821,350,686,756.60, or a full 1/3 of the national budget. Most of the funds are spent on purchasing arms from foreign dealers.
