History
The history of Korangar traces back to roughly 900 BC, when the first permanent records appear. Ancient civilization on the island seems to be Celtic, and there is indication that it was likely heavily related to that of mainland Prestonia. These ancients were prolific seafarers and traders, with goods found in burial mounds coming from as far away as Kampfers. However, little written history remains from this time period, so we can only speculate upon how society functioned at the time. At any rate, we know based on Prestonian records from the time period that the kings of the island were often at war with the city-states of Prestonia, and that the city-state of Exeter conquered the island in 709 BC before being conquered itself by Old Preston, whereupon the island fell to Prestonian control and was named Shamrock Isle.
Prestonian rule over Shamrock Isle was often characterized by cruelty or apathy to its inhabitants, who had established their own culture separate from Prestonia itself. A key point of contention throughout Prestonian rule was the religious difference; Shamrockians, as Shamrock Isle's inhabitants called themselves, rejected the Church of Prestonia in favor of the more conservative Doomani Catholic church, and there were several conflicts in the 1600s over the ownership of slaves, outlawed nearly 200 years prior but historically an important part of Shamrockian culture. Though civil war never did break out, tensions ran high until 1707 with the passage of the Bill of Rights, which among other things guaranteed Shamrock Isle a voice in government.
Shamrock Isle would not be long for Prestonia however, as in 1883 the Cots, having traded with and raided the island in ancient times, renewed their interest and invaded, bringing an entire corps to wrest control of the island from its native inhabitants. The Shamrock Isle War pitted the 30,000 strong X Corps of the Royal Cottish Army against Shamrock Isle's garrison of 5,000 soldiers and roughly 15,000 irregular militiamen. With the numerical advantage, and a mainland government unwilling to embroil itself in the world war, the Cots captured the island after three months of fighting, the 20,000 defenders of Shamrock Isle having been slaughtered nearly to the man and the governor executed by blood eagle. While the government considered a full-scale counterattack which was to have involved nearly 100,000 men, this was ultimately rejected amidst the red tape of Parliament, and a half-hearted force of 5,000 Marines offered. These men, though supremely courageous and highly trained, were quickly beaten by the numerically superior Cots, who had dug into defensive positions in anticipation of a counterattack.
The island was quickly subdued to Cottish rule, with the majority of the Shamrockians fleeing the island, either back to Prestonia or scattering throughout Haven. Those few who remained were forcefully subjected to Cottish rule, with dissidents being brutally treated while Cots from the Cottish mainland crossed the Strobovia Strait and settled, thus quickly shifting the demographic makeup of the island's population and making it much easier for the Cottish administrators to control the island.
Government
Korangar is a Cottish colony, and as a result, it is highly autonomous from the control of the central government, being evident in the fact that the only things the central government controls directly in Korangar is the foreign policy, the defence policy and administers the flow of money from the central government to the colonial treasury. Cottish experience shows that the old form of administration with the administrative troika was less than ideal, and it has been decided to adopt the more traditional form of governmental organization in both colonies and counties alike. As a result, the colonies are governed by a Governor-General (Cottish: generalguvernør) who is elected by popular vote from the colony's population, and who answer to the Korangar Colonial Legislature (Cottish: Folketinget). Folketinget is elected every four years, but the Governor-General can petition Folketinget to call for new elections before the four-year term is up.
Korangar also have the right to send one representative to Rikstinget in Eeobroht in order to respesent the colony's interests. This representative is elected by popular vote from the population of Korangar every four years, during the national Rikstinget elections.
Demographics
Geography
The geography in Korangar Island has been described by some to be heaven on Earth. When one get away from the urbanized areas of the island, one will find oneself in a heaven on earth filled with lush grassy fields, interrupted with regular intervals by vast pine forests and pittoresque lakes amid mild hilly terrain.
The only major river, Korang measures 368 kilometers and runs from the central of the island to the eastern coastline, where it has its mouth.
The central and southern parts of the island is settled, with some 43 million people living in the nine major cities and the remaining 12 million people living in small rural villages and towns.
Korangar's landmass measures some 133 200 square kilometers, and is located in southwestern Haven. Korangar borders sea on all sides, with the Korangar Strait seperating Korangar from Prestonia to the east and the Strobovia Strait forming the rest of the sea borders. Korangar's coastline totals some 3 060 kilometers (excluding all offshore islands), and with Cotlands claims of an exclusive economic zone of 2 000 kilometers from shore makes the Korangar EEZ claim a total of 6 120 000 square kilometers. Of this, some 1 133 424 square kilomters are claimed as sovereign territorial waters.
Economy
Economically speaking, Korangar's main source of income is derived from the rich fishing in the Korangar Strait and the Axackal Sea, and from the equally rich whale schools that roam said ocean territories. Additionally, Korangar generate a great deal of income from the factories that have been established in the south end of the island, and from the farming that occupies the central parts of the island.
Military
Korangar is located in a strategically important location in West Haven. Located at the northwestern end of the Strobovia Strait east of Doomingsland, any ship that moves towards Questers, Jaredcohenia or Zukariaa must pass Korangar in order to get there. For this reason, there is a strong military presence on Korangar.
