The Royal Navy of the Estates-General is the oldest branch of the Praetonian armed forces and the only to pre-date the 1612 Revolution. The neglected Imperial Navy was hopelessly outmatched by the Grand Commonwealth 'naval militias' of privateers and merchantmen and, generally sympathetic to the liberal cause, was prone to defection. The Imperial Navy was abolished by the Grand Commonwealth as the Imperium Praetonianum lost its ports, and was not restored until the 1692 restoration under its new name. The navy is also responsible for the aerial defence of Praetonia's borders and seaways, as well as the strategic bombing role, under the auspices of Coastal Command. It is widely considered one of the world's powerful navies.

Organisation
The Line of Battle is made up of six hundred and sixty Carrier Task Forces, while a further two hundred and twenty five Light Carrier Task Forces carry out amphibious landings and lower intensity naval warfare activities such as sea control. Further ships and submarines operate independently or in more organic groupings such as cruiser squadrons.

Independent Formations
Frigate Squadrons - Conventionally powered Lieutenancy class frigates do not operate with Fleet units, but are formed into squadrons of one or more ships to patrol sea lanes and hunt submarines. They are also sometimes used for fisheries protection and other light duties.
Cruiser Squadrons - Cruisers sometimes operate independently in squadrons or sometimes with Cavalier class destroyers.
Submarines - All diesel electric and many nuclear submarines operate independently interdicting enemy military and merchant shipping, and clearing the seas of enemy submarines.
