Hyopria (pronounced: /'haɪoʊpriːə/, Hyoprian: Hyopre), official The Libertarian Coalition of Hyopria, is a country in eastern central Tyrrhenia, surrounded by the Camotes Straight, encompassing the majority of the large islands in the straight. It is bordered by Emperatium Drakonicum to the southwest through a narrow land bridge. The territory has been historically controlled by the Camutians and Navearians before and between control by the native Hyoprian people.
The original Duchy was formed in 1190 by the Duke of Hyopre, Abras Hyrescu. It existed in control of the main island of Hyopria until being conquered by the Navearian Empire from Ayá Navaera. It gained its freedom in the Navearian Civil War and gained control of most of its current territory under the control of King Yrág Herdascu. The Empire of Hyopria controlled the entirety of it's current land along with several additional islands for the majority of three hundred years. Hyopria became a Republican Diarchy in 1948 and pursued socialist policies which produced a republican form of government. In 2010, Hyopria officially became a democratic country with the replacement of the Diarchy by a succession of coalition governments before the final decision for a multi-ethnic, multi-denominational conciliar system.
Hyopria is notable for its strategic position as the guardian of eastern Tyrrhenian naval channels, it's substancial naval and aerial forces, it's significant technological development, and the high level of civil and political rights provided to it's people. Hyopria has a heavily regulated economy dominated by recently privatized organizations and military spending.

Etymology
The name of Hyopria comes from the (Hyoprian: Hyopre), which is the historical name of the primary island from the name of it's original leader. Foreign influences, translating the word, used the equivalent suffix in Naverean, -ia, meaning Land of, to describe the Duchy of Hyopre. The first mention of Hyopria comes from Navearian scholar Hechu Ormusk, who called the Hyoprians 𐤒𐤓𐤄𐤏𐤑, Heoprac. Connection with Latin languages transformed the word to Hyoprus.
Hyoprian Empire connection to English-speakers used the word Hyopria, which formed the same meaning. With the ascendancy of English as a lingua franca, the word become the permanent word for most cultures outside Camutians, Navearians, and Hyoprians. Camutians call it Híopra, Navearians use the word Heopra, and Hyoprians use their traditional name for their realm.
History
Historians have proved the Hyoprian isles were settled by people ethnically similar to the inhabitants of the mainland, particularly regions now under the control of the Emperatium Drakonicum. They migrated up the coastline, forming a settlement in a fertile river valley at a place called Zadurum (modern Ţadrum)
City-states controlled most of the up to modern Herdea, but generally left the rest of the region and outlying islands to another ethnic group that had arrived from Ayá Camut in the north. Camutians were of different stock, and frequently had conflicts with the Greek Hyoprians. Eventually the weak city states of Southern Hyopria were united by their bretheren in Zadurum and Hydera (modern Herdea) and ethnic Hyoprians controlled most of the island.
Duchy of Hyopria and Empire
The allied Zadurian and Hyderan Hyoprians conquered the disunified Camutian Hyopre and were unified under their first common Duke, whose namesake gave the name of the country. The Hyoprians, exhilerated by a second wind now that their homeland was once again unified, turned to conquering their neighboring islands. Further expansionism was cut short by the rapid expansion from Ayá Navaer of ocean-faring raiders, the Navearians, who overwhelmed and conquered Ayá Camut, annexing the Camutian islands under their control.
The Hyoprians lost to the superior navy of the Navearians, who formed it and Ayá Camut into vassal states of their empire before, in 1442, the Navearians suffered a dynastic war which ended with the loss of Ayá Camut and Hyopria. The two islands separated but large numbers of Camutians, interbred with the Hyoprians, remained on Hyopre and especially in the outward islands. As the Camutians became strong traders, they fed a war machine that allowed the Hyoprians to form an empire of their own, systematically conquering neighboring islands, the Ayé Mijloc and Fizic.
The Empire urbanized and the kings of Hyopria reminded the world of their claim to Ayá Camut. They attempted to invade at several points but were repelled by Navearian intervention. While Hyopria could destroy the weakened Navearians, the Camutians were strong and had large numbers of infantry to destroy the advantage of Hyoprians in naval power. Hyoprians destroyed the Navearians in the Second War of Ayá Camut but only managed established a brief hold on Ayá Camut. During the Third War of Ayá Camut, the Hyoprians succeeded in conquering the majority of Ayá Camut, bringing the island into the fold. Ayá Navaer, repeatly thrashed, eventually fell to Hyoprian power as well. Hyopria was the dominant power in the islands.
Diarchy of Hyopria
The Camutian minority of Hyopria were abused in the Camutian Wars. They held significant political power in their wealth and raised up a riot in Hyopria. While it was suppressed, the Fourth Camutian War was ongoing and taking significant wealth, most of which now being from the nobility, not only Camutians but also Hyoprians. They angrily rose up and successfully took over, appointing two nobles the leaders, forming a new dynasty of Dukes and curbing his power by appointing a non-royal Minister from their own ranks.
Hyoprian stability was frequently put in jeopardy by internal strife and the rise of other nations such as the Byzantine Empire and Mykola. Hyoprians relied heavily on the fertility of Ayá Camut and Ayá Navaer to feed their growing population. With the rise of nationalism, dukes repeatedly had problems with dissidents chafing under the strongly centralized rule of the Hyoprian nobility.
Hyoprian succession was put into crisis in the late 19th century, with two sons of the duke battling over domains. The succession crisis showed the seriousness of the ethnic tensions, especially after the older of the duke's sons died and his brother-in-law, a Camutian nobleman, continued the crisis as a regent for his teenaged son. With the war in deadlock and the original participants aging, a ceasefire was written up. Ayá Camut and Ayá Navaer remained independent, controlled by a Camutian-Hyoprian dynasty, the Camascus. The main Hyoprian island and the rest of Hyoprian territory came under the control of an ethnically Hyoprian dynasty, the Hyrescus.
The instability of Patrie Hyopria due to food crisises put strains on the already weakened empire. Hyoprian dynasties became increasingly isolationist, nationalism taking a thorough hold on the nation. The mixed population of Ayé Mijloc and Fizic were persecuted and the Camutian Temple banned. The only real link the Hyoprians maintained was with the Byzantine Empire, seen by the Hyoprian nationalists as ethnic brethren. Hyopria became a backwater area with a reputation for xenophobia. The straits they had dominated were largely the domain of other nations.
Socialist Hyopria
As republicanism and liberalism spread throughout the rest of Tyrrhenia, Hyopria remained very centralized. Even so, the growing population strained the limited food resources of the main island. Socialism traveled through the land bridge and found significant support amongst the massive lower class. Pressure from political groups forced democratic changes and increasingly socialized policies. In 1948, the Duke abdicated after the nobility pressured a reversal of the isolationist policies. His son was allowed to remain in power, but chose to use a more republican title, Magistrate. Within a few years, though, Hyopria had become thoroughly socialist. Though the monarchy remained, the nobility was stripped of significant privileges. Religious organizations were closed down and the country became officially atheist.
Socialist rule saw Hyopria become heavily industrialized and open to the rest of Tyrrhenia. Imports of food helped the economy survive upheavals of the agricultural system. Hyoprian nationalism outweighed socialist ideals of equality and the government formed a powerful conscripted military that looked hungrily at Ayá Camut. The Hyoprian people also regained control of their portion of the straits.
The socialized system eventually lost appeal due to the influence of a large middle class. Nationalism also changed it's tone, becoming less xenophobic and less reliable as a way to maintain public support. Increasingly underground religious leaders pushed for a more moderate nationalism that included Camutians and Navaerians - Pan-Camotean nationalism. In the late 1990s, the Diarchy created state-owned corporations for agriculture and heavy industry. Private farming was put into effect, with farmers selling their crops at subsidized rates to the national government. Religion was permitted again.
Modern Hyopria
The Hyoprian economy continued to liberalize, with privatization programs spinning state-owned factories, agricultural zones, public services, and health care into new corporations. The government retained a strong hand on the economy and remained in control of military production and food distribution, but otherwise the Hyoprian economy became capitalist.
In 2010, the Hyoprians ended the ceasefire that had been in effect for more than a century. While officially Ayá Camut and Navaer remained Hyoprian, they had been under government from a Camutian administration for years. Ironically, in the time between their de facto independence, the population had become less Camutian, not more, with escaping Hyoprians and the largely Hyoprian upper class contributing to this. The agricultural problems that had caused political change in Hyopria did not effect the northern islands, and they were for most of the 20th century far more prosperous than Hyopria itself.
Hyoprian troops invaded Ayá Camut and Ayá Navaer simultaneously. Militaristic policies and technological advancements put the Hyoprians far ahead of the Camutians, and they had surrounded the Camutian capital within a few weeks. The Camutians capitulated, with Pan-Camoteans, the Future Front movement, taking power.
In the wake of the war, nationalism once again became a major part of Hyopria. Reunited with their breadbasket, Hyopria was more comfortable with industrialization. However, at the same time, Camutian nationalists remained problematic. In late 2010, the diarchy collapsed, with the Magistrate assassinated by a Camutian. Young and childless, the Diarchy lacked a successor. Rather than appoint one of the nobility for the role, the Hyoprian government chose to replace it with a Presidential Council headed by the third-in-command, Adrem Tfrescu. Under Tfrescu's administration, which was noted for being corporatist and called by opponents "Facist", the government reduced their control over the economy and turned to a parliamentary system. Tfrescu desired closer bilateral relations with powerful countries like Augarundus and other members of the Multilateral Coalition.
Reflecting the precedent of large civilian demonstations, socialists and republicans demonstrated against the reduction of civil rights. Rather than break up the demonstrations, the military, which was suffering budget cuts to compensate for state revenue loss, joined in and ousted Tfrescu. Hyopria officially became the "Libertarian Coalition of Hyopria" after the adoption of the "Resolution of Universal Equality", which heavily decentralized the country. It was split into collections of islands largely deliniated by ethnicity. Native administrations speaking their own languages were established in Ayá Camut and Ayá Navaer. Hyopria was now ruled by a council of elected representatives. The individual regions were largely independent in administration, law, and public and private services, and local taxation, but were unified by national taxes, foreign policy, and military service.
As tensions have increased across Tyrrhenia, Hyopria has become closely connected to Emperatium Drakonicum and has joined the WEDEBLOC.
Geography
At 79,014 kilometers, Hyopria is small for the massive number of people it contains. The Scquar river bisects Hyopria and ends up in the Bay of Herdea. Most of Hyopria is lowland and heavily urbanized, but there is a single volcanic-origin mountain, Mount Királk, where the Scquar is fed by near-constant snow. On the outlying islands, less urbanization and more protection exists.
Hyopre has rather high elevation for an island. The majority of the island is bordered by cliffs which are anywhere from 100 to 400 feet high. This produces a colder climate than most of the outlying islands.
Islands
Hyopria's sovereign control contains 44 islands of variable size, with 25 officially recognized as separate units. Three islands are classified as "Major Islands" and are part of the top-level subdivisions: Hyopre, Ayá Camut, Ayá Navaer. Twenty islands are classified as "Minor Islands" and are part of either one of the five island group secondary subdivisions or sub-subdivisions of one of the major administrative areas. Census data reports that 39 of these islands have a significant civilian presence. Three islands are owned by the military for bases or testing purposes, and the other two are state-owned and protected as nature preserves.
Islands and Island Groups in order of size: Hyopre, Ayá Camut, Ayá Navaer, Ţesoasă, Retrul, Egida, Faţă, Gambǎ, Mai Mare, Palarie, Surori, Mai Mici, Turnuri, Labele, Shef, Ochile, Pui.

Climate
Hyopria has Mediterranean climate biased towards cold. It the high temperature average is 92ºF (33.3ºC) and the low is 49ºF (9ºC) Spring is cool but not cold, with warmer afternoons and mild nights. Summers are generally mild, biased towards heat, rarely going below 68ºF or above 97ºF. Fall and Winter show little difference, with Winter never having snow except on Mount Királk. They are generally cold, hovering around 55ºF. During Hyopria's winter months, there is significant rainfall. The Hyoprian isles rarely have ice.
The recorded high is 106ºF in Herdea's heat island and 20ºF on the top of Mount Királk.
Demographics
According to census data, Hyopria has about 479,000,000. Hyopria has a population with a majority of the Hyoprian people, roughly 82%, almost all on the original islands. Camutians form roughly 14% of the population, predominantly on Ayá Camut but also with a significant population on Hyopre and Ayá Navaer. Navearians make up less than 4% of the population, and live on Ayá Navaer, where they constitute a majority of 71%, and on neighboring islands. Less than one percent of the population is of foreign ancestry, dominantly Greeks and foreign envoys and businessmen.
Hyopria has significant urbanization, especially on Hyopre. The largest urban area is centred on the Bay of Herdea. The population density reaches upwards of three thousand people per square kilometer in this area. Şadu, the southern side of Mount Daţog, and the "Hyoprian Fertile Crescent" also have a smaller, but still significant population. The rest of the island, especially the highlands of the West, Southeast, and mid-northwest is largely rural or unpopulated.
Ayá Camut is more rural, with cities predominantly being found at the end of the runoff rivers from Mount Vjetër. The population is centred at the bottom of the island due to the trade opportunities to be found there, though the majority of agricultural production is in the north and west. Ayá Navaer is largely unpopulated but for hill farms, and the centres of population are at the northwestern edge and northeastern edge.
Hyoprians do not drive often, with the size of the islands and mountains making public transport more viable. The government retains a monopoly on almost all transport.
Language
Hyopria has three official languages: Hyoprian (Hyopră), Camutian (Zhamút), and Navearian (Nayvaa). Hyoprian, spoken by roughly fourth-fifths of the population, is a Romance language that uses a modified Latin alphabet. It is linguistically similar to Latin but has significant Navearian, Camutian, and Greek influence.
Camutian is spoken by almost then entire population of Ayá Camut and a large population of Navearians. It is somewhat similar to Hyoprian due to the large amount of loanwords it has provided, though it is not intelligible by Hyoprian speakers. It is rather different in basis but uses a Latin alphabet and Hyoprian uses many of its words. It is a very Slavic language with some German and Greek loanwords.
Navearian is a dying language, losing most of it's members to interbreeding with Camutians, but has recieved support by the national government for revitalization. It is completely different from the other languages, though in some ways closer to Hyoprian. It is normally written in Latin, where its name is Nayvaa, but can also be written in a Semetic abjad..
Regional languages include the Ţeol (Zseol) language, a creole derived from a mixture of Navearian and Hyoprian that can be found on the Mai Mare and Mai Mici islands; Mişteran, a dialect of Hyoprian with heavy Greek influence that is spoken in the Turnuri Islands; Fizican, a combination of Hyoprian, Navearian, Camutian, and the indigenous languages of the outer islands; and Aboriginal Languages, the broad term for the languages spoken in the Ayé Fizic, Faţă, and Surori.
Religion
Hyopria is a secular state and has been since 1948, though freedom of religion existed de facto for centuries due to the mixture of cultures inhabiting the country, and in law since 1878.
Hyopria is around 79% Christian of Orthodox, Navaerian, and Catholic sects, 10% Templars, >1% Judaic or Islamic, and 11% atheist, pagan, or agnostic.
The dominant religious entity is the Hyoprian Orthodox Church, an independent branch of the Byzantine Church that is centered at Jálo, a suburb of Herdea. The religious nature of Hyopria is a matter of debate, because strong nationalism has dictated a very large following among ethnic Hyoprians of Hyoprian Christianity. Even so, the majority of Hyoprians are not church-goers, largely due to a severe lack of churches due to seizure of church lands during the Socialist era. 83% of ethnic Hyoprians are Orthodox Christians, and a further 6% are Catholics. ~11% of the ethnic Hyoprian population is atheist or agnostic.
The Camutian Temple (Hram Zhamutí) is the dominant religious entity amongst Camutians. A combination Semetic and native religion that emphasizes freedom and respect for diversity, but also emphasizes it's superiority, Camutian religion has a supreme god, Pírun, and a familiar duality motif. Most of the gods of the elements were either mixed into Pírun or turned into lesser spirits. Camutians hold their religion as extremely important. 94% of Camutians are Templars, 2% Christian, and 4% agnostic or athiest.
Centuries of connection to other religions has eroded nearly all traditional forms of worship amongst Navaerians. 81% are Christians of their own sect, which has many of the same characteristics as a Levantine Christian one, 10% of them (especially on Hyopre and in the Ayé) are Orthodox, 2% are Templars, and the remaining 7% are nonreligious.
Indigenous beliefs other than the dominant one have gained a particular growth in worshipers amongst strong nationalists who advocate a return to paganism. Camutian nationalists have pushed for stronger emphasis on the lesser elemental dieties, while Slavic nationalists have tried to restart pagan traditions.
