History
Early History
The continent comprising of Cohenia, Ichkeria, and Soviet Bloc is thought to have been occupied prior to the arrival of the Slavs and Caucasians by relatives of the Pataari States in South Haven, though little is known of these people. After the arrival of the first Slavs at what is now Sula, these Pataari relatives are thought to have gone extinct. Various city-states states were founded along the coasts from 300BC to 57BC, the most famous of which turned into Cohenia's capital Stuyvesant (founded 142BC).
At the founding of the city states across the continent, many practiced a religion similar to the Ancient Romans, praying to a multitude of gods. Christianity was introduced into Cohenia via Doomingsland and the Doomani Pope in the middle of the fourth century, and Catholicism became the de jure religion for most of the city-states. Zstivistun was christianized in 398, Amiltonsc in 406, Sorison in 420, Fersc (now Ferringrad) in 422, and Dayan in 465.
Early Attempts to Unite
Though the early Cohenians shared a religion and skin color, they rarely saw eye-to-eye with each other. States invaded one another frequently and were subject to invasion from various sea traveling hordes and bandits, slowing down the advancement of the major city states. At the First Council of Amiltonsc, the duchies and states of Zstivistun, Amiltonsc, Thulisraythe, Sorison, Fersc, Bromocray, Saliscayana, Nodnodansc, and Ircalsc agreed to loosely unite into the Cohenian League in 894 as a pact to mutually defend and represent each other. A legislature was set up in Ircalsc, called the confedera caposco (loosely translated as "Head of the Confederation"), which was comprised of three delegates from each represented city-state. Other city-states eventually joined the Cohenian League, but power remained in the hands of Ircalsc, which controlled the politics, Zstivistun, which controlled religion, and Amiltonsc, which controlled trade.
Break with the Doomani Church
In the six hundred years after the Christianization of the city-states, tensions frequently sparked between the Popes of the Church of Doomingsland and the Patriarchs of Zstivstun. Embittered by political and ecclesiastical differences and theological disputes, Pope Urbanus IX and Patriarch Fiodor III made the conflict worse by suppressing Doomani and Cohenian in their respective domains. In 1077, Doomani legates traveled to Fiodor III to deny him the title of Ecumenical Patriarch and insist that he recognize the Church of Doomingsland's supremacy and claim to be head and mother of the churches. When Fiodor refused, the leader of the legates, Cardinal Maximus Innocentus Urbanus excommunicated Fiodor and Fiodor reciprocated by excommunicating the legates and refusing to recognize Doomani papal primacy, establishing a de facto church in Cohenia.
Cohenian League Dissolves
As the Cohenian League grew in economic power, the state of Amiltonsc gained much wealth as the primary trading hub and port city. Deciding that it did not need rival states Zstivistun and Ircalsc gaining wealth from her work, Amiltonsc recalled her senators and declared independence from the League. Fersc, Maynilosc, Saliscayana, Montovsc, and other states followed Amiltonsc's example and declared their independence from Ircalcsc. Senators argued over whose fault the breakup was and, in 1241, formally dissolved the Cohenian League.
Crusade of 1247
After losing its major source of money from Amiltonsc, the Duchy of Zstivistun was unable to exercise much of its power as the religious center of the continent. While the Duchy was not a wealthy state comprable to the neighboring Amiltonsc kingdom, it had a much larger population and a fanatical obsession with the Patriarch of the Zstivistun Church. On 17 January 1249, Patriarch Alexey VI called for a crusade on the heretical King of Amiltonsc, denouncing him as a lecher, polyamorist, paedophile, and murderer. According to historian Taras the Wise, Duke Pyotr II stormed into St. Ruric's Cathedral and threatened to kill the Patriarch as a traitor if he did not call for a holy war. War ensued for five years with Zstivistun and Fersc united fighting Amiltonsc until the King of Amiltonsc, Iosef Amilsky, surrendered his kingdom and daughter Catarina to Pyotr. Taras the Wise stated that the consummation of the marriage between Pyotr and Catarina was fitting - Pyotr violently raped his new wife in a way similar to his people slaughtering the Amiltonscar populace.
Further expansion
After the Duchy of Zstivistun conquered Amiltonsc, it had the resources to go to war with neighboring kingdoms on a much larger scale. Using gold and weapons seized from the Amiltonscar Kingdom, the Duchy of Zstivistun was able to annex the Rayorsk Kingdom in the east and the Saliscayana Duchy in the north by 1261. By 1297, the Duchy of Zstivistun had created a kingdom stretching from the Fyre Sea and Pensk in the west to the Sorison cape in the east, bounded by the Zykranian hoards and Dakotastani steppe in the South and the Fiyra League, comprised of the Dayan Republic, the Gorcan Kingdom, and the Kingdom of Saccha, in the east.
