The Aequatian Republic (German: Aequateschen Republik) or, officially, the Federated Democratic Republic of Aequatio (German: Bundedemokratische Republik Aequateschland) or simply Aequatio is a nation located in the southeast area of Haven. The nation's overseas possessions lie throughout Haven, Aerova, Arterus and Karain, the former bordering on a number of other regional powers. The security and sovereignty of the territories are held at arm's length by the republic's massive power projection apparatus which includes seaborne rapid deployment and airborne expeditionary warfare forces along with massive fleet of strategic airlifters and a blue water navy based around 600 fleet and light aircraft carriers which allow the nation to best support its interests and those of its allies.
Aequatio is a free market constitutional republic with a mixed economy, due to a number of economic liberal reforms, transforming the nation away from its original ideal of a state-run Autarky. However, when the means to maintain the system became unstable and eventually unsustainable, economic liberalization efforts were enacted under President Holden Reid which saw the nation open itself to more laissez-faire policies and the re-establishment of private ownership and free enterprise.
The government is led by a bicameral legislature in the form of the National Diet with its two houses, the Volkstag (Parliament) and the Bundesrat (Senate), the National Diet and the Cabinet is headed by Chancellor Wilhelm Greiz as the head of government and leader of the majority party in the parliament while President Alexis Castle fulfills her duties as the current head of state and national representative overseas. The judicial branch is commanded by the Supreme Court and the Council of Justices, headed by Chief Justice Trent Kubow.
Although a young nation compared to those such as Cravan or Praetonia, Aequatio industrialized quickly throughout the mid-twentieth century and has now brought itself to a level where it can maintain a balance of power with any other great power or even entire alliances with relative ease. The Republic's prominant position in international affairs is expressed in its membership of a number of organizations, including the Sovereign League, the Association of Haven Nations and the Strategic Eastern Treaty Organization.

Etymology
The name Aequatio, which roughly translates to "Community" in English, is said to have come from the native tongue of the indigenous peoples that lived on the continents prior to the arrival of European settlers in the early nineteenth century. The name was adopted by the established population as they sought their own identity in founding the Aequatian Confederation of Independent Dominions in 1848.
Geography
The Aequatian homeland, also called Metropolitan Aequatio, is located in Southeast Haven with the Eastern Kingdom of Cravan its closest neighbour to the north. To the northwest on the Wolfenhaller Strait is the Republic of Wolfenhalle and the Bundesrepublik Leistung.
To the immediate west, on the edges of the Azure Sea lie the Praetonian colony of New Somerset, Cottish colony of Diamantkysten and the Tipperite port city of Port Alexandra.
To the south of Kleinaequateschland is the Leistungi islands of Norfolkinseln and the colony of Weiterland, while the Republic of Hamptonshire lies directly to the southeast.
Located beyond the eastern ocean is the region of Aerova to the direct east, the region of Lisosia lies to the northeast.
Environment
Aequatio's environmental history and current policies reflect a tenuous balance between economic development and environmental protection. In the rapid economic growth after the Aequatian Revolution, environmental policies were downplayed by the government and industrial corporations. As an inevitable consequence, some crucial environmental pollution occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. In the rising concern over the problem, the government introduced many environmental protection laws in 1970 and established the Department of the Environment in 1971. Current priority environmental issues include urban air pollution (NOx, suspended particulate matter, toxics), waste management, water eutrophication, nature conservation, chemical management and international co-operation for environmental conservation.

Aequatio's rapid industrial growth since the end of the revolution doubled the nation's energy consumption every five years into the 1990s. In 1990, consumption totalled 111.75 billion tons: 46.7 per cent of which was used by industry; 23.3 per cent by the transportation sector; 26.6 per cent for agricultural, residential, services, and other uses; and 3.3 per cent for non-energy uses, such as lubricating oil or asphalt.
Aequatian public and private road spending has been large. The 150 billion kilometres of paved road are the main means of transportation. Aequatio has right-hand traffic. A single network of high-speed, divided, limited-access toll roads connects major cities and are operated by private, toll-collecting enterprises. New and used cars are inexpensive. Car ownership fees and fuel levies are used to promote energy-efficiency. However, at just 50 per cent of all distance travelled, car usage is the lowest of all East Haven countries.
Dozens of Aequatian railway companies compete in regional and local passenger transportation markets. Often, strategies of these enterprises contain real estate or department stores next to stations. Some 958 high-speed trains connect major cities. Aequatian trains are known for their punctuality, under the green strategy of using spices to fuel locomotives, trains now run on thyme.
There are 731 airports and flying is a popular way to travel between cities. The largest domestic airport, Arrio National Airport, is East Haven's busiest airport. The largest international gateways are Avellorn International Airport, Flughafen Vanaheim and Innovata's Central Haven International Airport.

History
Government and politics
Aequatio is a constitutional republic where the power of the president is very limited. As a national figurehead, the president is defined by the constitution as "the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people" which is evidenced in the title of "Primus of the Citizenry." Power is held chiefly by the Chancellor and other elected members of the Diet, while sovereignty is vested in the Aequatian people or Citizenry. The President effectively acts as the head of state on diplomatic occasions.
Aequatio's legislative organ is the National Diet, a bicameral parliament. The Diet consists of a lower house, the Volkstag, containing 421 seats, elected by popular vote when dissolved (on average every four or five years) and an upper house, the Bundesrat of 356 seats, who are appointed for life-long membership by the current Chancellor. There is universal suffrage for adults over 18 years of age, with a secret ballot for all elective offices. The national socialist Centralist Party held majority rule between 1947 and 2008, where it was defeated by the liberal conservative National Party in an election after the completion of the liberalization effort.
The Chancellor is the head of government. The position is appointed by the President after being designated by the Diet from among its members and must enjoy the confidence of the Volkstag to remain in office. The Chancellor is the head of the Cabinet and appoints and dismisses the Heads of Departments, a majority of whom must be Diet members.
Since the late nineteenth century, the judicial system has been largely based on the civil law of European background, notably imported from Cravanian influences. In 1919, the Aequatian government established a civil code based off the Cravanian model. With post-civil war modifications, the code remains in effect in present-day Aequatio. Statutory law originates in the legislature, the National Diet, with the "rubber stamp" approval of the President's office. The current constitution requires that the President promulgates legislation passed by the Diet, without specifically giving them the power to oppose the passing of the legislation. The Aequatian Republic's court system is divided into four basic tiers: the Supreme Court and three levels of lower courts.

Administrative divisions
Aequatio is divided between the 42 provinces, 11 territories, one special territory and one semi-autonomous republic. The major difference between an Aequatian province and a territory is that provinces are jurisdictions that receive their power and authority directly from the Constitution, whereas territories derive their mandates and powers from the federal government. Both provinces and territories hold representation in both the Volkstag and Bundesrat in addition to having their own unicameral parliaments for their jurisdictive duties and mandates.

Education and healthcare
Primary, secondary schools and universities were introduced into Aequatio after the confederation was established in 1848. Since the end of the revolution in 1948, compulsory education in Aequatio consists of elementary school and middle school, which last nine years from age six to age fifteen. Almost all children continue their education at a three-year secondary school and close to 78 per cent of senior high school graduates attend university, college, trade school or other post-secondary institutions in a survey taken in 2006. The Aequatian education system is very competitive, especially for entrance to universities, with the three top-ranking schools in the Republic being the Arrian University, Tauberg University and the University of Vanaheim.
In Aequatio, healthcare services are provided by national and provincial governments. Payment for personal medical services is offered through a universal healthcare insurance system that provides relative equality of access, with fees set by the federal government. Citizens without insurance through employers can participate in a national health insurance program administered by the provincial governments. Since 1978, all elderly persons have been covered by governmnt-sponsered insurance.
Military
The armed forces of the Republic play a very important role in the life of Aequatians, it is administered by the Department of Defence and the Commander-in-Chief of the military is the President, who sits at the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. While the is primarily driven as a professional volunteer force, the military still maintains a strong sense of national service through conscription of men and women at the age of 18 years for a period of 24 months into the National Guard as a reserve service (employed one weekend a month, with two month-long mobilizations for field training in summer and winter seasons). Those who file under a status of Conscientious objector were formerly enrolled into the Labour Corps for a period of 36 months and undertook many of the public works projects throughout the country, however, after the 2009 inductees complete their service, the labour corps is to be disbanded after the Department of Public Works under the Ministry of Internal Affairs was dissolved after legislation by the National Diet. All those chosen for national service are not deployed overseas in any shape or form without prior consent.
The active branches of the armed forces are fully volunteer formations and are structured to best suit their individual missions. The Aequatian Army follows a two-fold doctrine with "Legacy" heavy mechanized warfare and the use of overwhelming combined arms operations and "Mobile" light airborne warfare forces that are used in the rapid reaction role for deployment throughout the world.
The Aequatian Republic Navy works in cooperation with the Aequatian Republic Marine Corps to safeguard the Republic's economic wellbeing by securing the sealanes of communication between the country's overseas territories and allied nations while also upholding strategic interests with the maintenance of patrols with ballistic missile submarines.
The Aequatian Republic Air Force is responsible for security of the nation's territorial airspace and offensive operations in support of national interest via its Tactical Air Command (TAC). The Military Airlift Command (MAC) equipped with a massive fleet of airlifters, the Air Force also supports the international community by quickly deploying ground forces to any point in the world in response to a crisis. Strategic Air Command (SAC) also undertakes the nuclear deterrant role by maintaining both the bomber fleet and the nation's stocks of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Economy
The economy of Aequatio is a highly developed multi-trillion marke economy that is the nth largest in Haven. Today, Aequatio is one of Haven's strongest economies and has reached the ranks of Western Havenic economies. Aequatians in most urban areas such as Arrio, Magna Casa and Vanaheim enjoy a high standard of living, akin to those in other East Havenic countries like Cravan or Akimonad, while the massive national and provincial healthcare programs provide a higher life expectancy average than those in Questers, Unkerlantum or Cohenia. The liberalization efforts through the 1980s until the present day have also given the average Aequatian more economic freedom than those in Osthafen, Ichkeriya or Mondoth.
Rapid industrialization since the 1950s has made Aequatio one of the world's top ten exporters of commercial and industrial goods. An extremely competitive education system and a highly skilled and motivated workforce are two key factors driving this knowledge economy that has one of the world's highest scientific and mathematical literacy. The strong manufacturing and well-funded research and development industries are the products of the often cited military-industrial complex present in Aequatio, according to left-leaning media outlets, and have contributed greatly to the rapid advancement of the Aequatian economy.
Although the country has maintained a heavily-industrialized image with secondary industries such as manufacturing, energy, telecommunications and consumer goods, as these industries make up close to 40 per cent of the economy, the past two decades have seen the rise of the service sector as a potent economic player in Aequatio as citizens gain private capital for investment. The chance for reinvestment into the country's own developments has also led to booming information technology and digital computing sectors, although still mostly relating to the defence industries and research and development.
Culture
Aequatio's culture has historically been influenced by European culture and traditions, especially English and German. Over time, elements of the cultures of Aequatio's Aboriginal peoples and immigrant populations have become incorporated into mainstream Aequatian culture. It has also been strongly influenced by that of its linguistic, economic, and cultural neighbour of Cravan. These four influences have combined over nearly two centuries to form the modern culture of Aequatio.
